Part Eleven
Staring, coldly, freaky with no emotion. The man had small eyes with little hair and was quite slim. He looked ill, mentally ill. But no one seemed to notice as he stared at Duffy. Holding her staff photo in his hand, his grip got tighter.
At the staffroom door Duffy was chatting to Andrew and Anna.
”Will you come in instead of withering about at the doorway?”
“Sorry. Oh Andrew!”
Noticing how upset she was Anna places and hand on her shoulder and leaves.
“Duffy? What’s wrong?”
“I just saw the poor wee kids mother! That poor kid Andrew! He never stood a chance! And what if something happens to this one?” she wraps her arms around her ever growing bump.
“Oh Duffy. Come here! Nothing is going to happen.”
Hugging her he cursed himself for giving in and letting her come in today he knew too well she was overtired and quite emotional.
“Come on let’s get home and get the boys ready for swimming.”
“I just need to see Charlie first.”
“Alright. I’ll wait in the car.”
“I’m off now Charlie.”
“Off swimming are we?”
Laughing she could hear that he wasn’t happy with it in his voice.
“Yes! Need my exercise!”
“Exercise?! You run round here all day!”
“Hehe. Yes suppose but the boys don’t. Sitting on that Wii all day! Well Jake does anyway.”
“Come here you!” Bringing her in his arms he didn’t want to let go.
“Take care then. Okay?”
“Yes dad!” Realising what she just she looked at the floor then back up.
“I’ll see you tomorrow yeah.”
Walking to her car she didn’t see the man. Watching her he got in his own car, following her and Andrew home. Stopping at their street he noted the address and sat outside of the house.
Inside Duffy was trying to get the boys ready for swimming but Jake was more interested in putting his shirts all over the floor and Peter was detriment to make the kitchen into a tip and Duffy was reaching the edge of her patientence. Rubbing her head and pushing her hair back she grabbed Jake first.
“Right! Come on lets get your costume on eh?”
”Yeahhh!”
Smiling put the costume on half regretting agreeing to take them. After getting Jake sorted she got Peter and quickly got his on. Smiling again at Andrew she gave him a quick kiss and drove the boys to the pool unaware of the extra guest following them with his son in the back. After getting there Duffy was regretting even more going, the baby was moving so much that she was more tired than before. After getting a slightly hyper Jake changed she finally got them in the pool while she opted for playing with Jake rather than swim and tire herself out any more. Playing with Jake she really couldn’t enjoy it. She felt so uncomfortable, at 29 weeks it was no shock, with such a big bump her back was killing her. Pushing it to the back of her mind she watched her son play with a child about a year older she wasn’t to know the father was watching her with such a cold stare. Swimming up to her he smiles.
“Hello.”
“Oh hello.”
“Marcus” He holds out his hand for her to shake and once she does grins.
“Duffy.”
“Nice to meet you. Your son so cute.”
“Sorry?”
“Oh sorry my son is playing with yours.”
“Oh right!” She smiles weakly.
“When’s the baby due?”
“Not for just over 2 months yet.”
“At the fed up stage now?”
”Yeah! How many kids do you have?”
“Just the one. Yourself?”
“This is my third. Your wife here?”
“Oh no. We broke up.”
“Sorry!”
“Your husband?”
“At home! Relaxing. Anyway I better get going.”
“How about I buy you and your boys a drink at the Café before you go?”
“Oh…Erm alright. I’ll meet you outside.”
About 15 minutes later she walks out with a half asleep Jake in her arms and a hyper Peter at her side. In the café Marcus brings a bottle of juice for the kids and fresh orange for Duffy and himself. After a short talk Duffy felt herself getting light headed. Standing up she could barley see!
“I…I…Oh”
With that she fainted right in to the arms of Marcus.
