Jimmi’s current girlfriend Suzy wants to see a female Doctor, and will not speak to Jimmi about a medical concern that she has. Sarah gives Suzy the disapproving eye in reception.
Greg works a shift at the Police Station, tending to a drunken patient,
Julia visits Marcia who is still in hospital post her drunk and disorderly charge; Julia offers Marcia a home for a few more days without Mac’s knowledge.
Jimmi admits he is worried Suzy has a STI, (sexually transmitted infection), and asks Helen to see her.
Sarah tells Faith that she is not impressed by Jimmi’s taste in women or pandering to Suzy as he waits with Suzy in reception.
Suzy faces Helen and says she has a rash. Suzy is relieved when Helen diagnoses a harmless condition, Tinea. Helen reflects on her own attraction when Suzy leaves the office.
Julia accompanies Marcia as she is discharged from hospital. Marcia is horrified to be formally introduced to Greg, realising he examined her whilst drunk previously.
Sarah deliberately listens as Helen teases Jimmi, who is terrified about Suzy’s diagnosis. Helen is not easily swayed by Jimmi’s charms, despite Sarah’s thought to the contrary, but Helen enjoys the male attention. Sarah is jealous of Jimmi’s flirting, and to make matters worse, is then caught out listening to Jimmi and Helen's conversation by Julia. Sarah gossips to Faith in her treatment room about Jimmi and Helen. Sarah is once again shamed to be caught idle by Julia.
Julia takes out her frustrations, trying to find emergency housing for Marcia, to Helen. Julia apologises but is worried that Mac does not know yet that Marcia is still staying with them. Julia heads home to check on Marcia.
As Jimmi waits for a lunch date with Suzy, Sarah cannot help running down Suzy to Jimmi. Jimmi turns the conversation back to himself, and flirts to keep Sarah sweet. Suzy arrives to meet Jimmi, laden with expensive shopping, and parades this under Sarah’s nose, well and truly put out of joint.
Mac is startled to find Marcia at home. Julia arrives home and realises how annoyed Mac still is; Mac remembers his own alcohol abuse, brought back by Marcia’s stay. Julia backs down, but Mac offers to try and help Marcia, as he understands her predicament. Julia hugs Mac.
Mac talks bluntly to Marcia. Mac suggests that Marcia uses alcohol as a coping mechanism, which shocks Marcia. Mac tells her he wants to help, but Marcia feels tearful and leaves the room.
Mac searches Marcia’s room; he finds bottles of alcohol hidden. Mac is alone, and sorely tempted to have a drink himself.
Meanwhile, John Brownlow is arrested for being drunk and possible burglary, and examined by Greg at the Police Station. Greg sends John to hospital, suspecting Horner’s Syndrome, (a problem with the lungs). John has a Pancoast Tumour, which affects the nerves that control his eyes. This needs possible radiotherapy to help prolong life. John leads a lonely life; he no longer has contact with his Son, and has no one to accompany him to hospital. Greg works beyond the call of duty and gives time to John when he is at at his lowest. Greg helps John trace his Son through records and reunites Father and Son.

Marcia returns to Mac and Julia’s from hospital. Mac’s demons with alcohol return; Mac finds Marcia’s alcohol stash at home, and is tempted to take a drink.
'A Change Of Key'
13th Sept
Mac is thoughtful the morning after finding Marcia’s alcohol stash at home. Julia has no idea that Mac considered taking a drink. Mac heads off to work.
Jimmi breezes into work as Greg and Sarah marvel at his expensive suit and watch. Mac catches them gawping and heads to his office. Sarah warns Faith that Mac is not in a good mood.
Mac harasses Helen in the car park, waiting for their meeting to start. Helen is not impressed but bites her lip at Mac's impatience.
In the staff room Faith asks the team why Mac is so grumpy today. Helen and Sarah agree, but it is Greg who is over heard discussing Mac's personal life as Mac enters. Mac stuns the team as he loses his temper and walks out.
Mac seeks solace in the corridor alone, aware that his outburst was over the top; and afraid of his own ability to cope recently. From his room Mac listens to Helen and Greg arranging a drink later. Mac paces his room tormented by thoughts of alcohol.
Sarah asks Jimmi innocent questions about his family, but cannot get a straight answer; Jimmi appears unprepared for questions, which intrigues Sarah more.
Julia greets Mac in his room, curious why Mac has managed to upset everyone today. Mac cannot open to Julia either; he remains isolated. Julia is planning dinner out later, unaware of Mac’s troubles as she leaves.
Jimmi, Greg and Sarah are off for a quick drink after work. Greg tells Jimmi that Mac is teetotal, and jokes to Jimmi about his flash lifestyle. Jimmi appears uncomfortable about talk of debt. Sarah remains intrigued by Jimmi's own life, the real him, as they leave the Centre together.
Meanwhile, Rachel Stenton moves into an elderly residential home leaving her piano behind. Rachel’s daughter, Gina, works abroad and cannot be around much. Rachel is waiting for a knee replacement, but cannot cope alone in her house. Mac offers different painkillers, but Rachel is frustrated and a proud woman, in obvious pain and not coping with the loss of her husband. Rachel considers taking her own life.
Sarah’s Nan used to live in the same home, and Sarah wants to help Rachel settle in. Sarah knows Maeve, another resident at the home, and visits both. Maeve and Rachel do not get on well at all, until Maeve admits her own years of depression and attempted suicide. Rachel feels that Maeve understands. Rachel agrees to speak to a Dr about her own depression Sarah kindly arranges for Rachel’s piano to be put in the common room at the home.
Mac does not tell anyone about his recent alcohol dilemma. Mac is frustrated and isolated.
Sarah is intrigued that Jimmi appears unprepared for questions about his family. Greg asks similar questions about debt to Jimmi, which leaves him uncomfortable.
'Free To Air'
14th Sept
Dorien, a DJ with a Birmingham radio station, is a chronic asthmatic. Dorien has a girlfriend, Charlene, and toddler, A J, who is monitored by Faith. Dorien runs a pirate radio station, and has debts, which does not impress Charlene, which prompts arguments. Dorien does not monitor his asthma well.
Faith encourages Dorien to be responsible for Charlene and AJ, whilst appreciating his artistic endeavour and being a fan of the pirate station herself. On air Dorien suffers an asthma attack, and without an inhaler handy, Faith steps into the breach en route with emergency assistance.
Dorien is about to lose consciousness as Faith arrives; Faith administers aid. Reg is obsessive about closing down Dorien's illegal station, actually a self styled vigilante, who pretends to be official. Reg's wife leaves him and he suffers an episode, prompting a visit to Faith. The episode is brought on by stress and shock. Reg catches up with Dorien on air, just as Dorien suffers the asthma a! ttack. Faith defends Dorien, as a sick patient.
'Father's Day'
15th September
Mac and Julia arrive at the Health Centre; arguing as the get out of the car. Julia is not impressed by Mac's rude outbursts all ready today. Mac is not himself, but unable to tell Julia how he is feeling; Julia is shocked that something is wrong but lets it go. At reception Sarah is at the receiving end of Mac's anger; but Mac is feeling lost and claustrophobic. Mac stands alone in the toilets, searching his own face for answers in the mirror.
Helen and Greg rush in late for work, to be received by Mac who is all ready seeing patients; Mac unleashes his frustration onto Helen and Greg, leaving them deflated. Helen and Greg discuss Mac's awful mood as they head to their rooms; deciding that Marcia's stay is to blame. Greg discloses Marcia's drinking problem to Helen. Both fear more arguments ahead and so Helen suggests that she and Greg offer their support. Greg agrees, and so Helen vows to speak to Mac.
Helen tries to talk to Mac in the staff room, which initially goes well, but the Mac becomes defensive and suggests that the team have been gossiping. Helen is left standing, as Mac leaves angry.
Jimmi appears to know a famous footballer when he calls into the Centre. Sarah is wide eyed and rushes to get his autograph, flirting shamelessly.
Greg has a quiet word with Julia, sharing concerns for Mac, bearing in mind Marcia's drink problem whilst staying with them. Julia feels guilty and tied by her assistance to her friend and husband's needs. Julia tells Greg that Mac will cope okay.
Julia falls in the centre, but her ankle pain is nothing beside her predicament at home. Julia covers her face with her hand, in agony, crumpled on the floor. Jimmi comes to Julia's rescue, helping her up and offering to take a look. Jimmi cheers Julia with his charm, a light relief to her day. Jimmi tells Julia that he still works one night a week at a private clinic, hence knowing a few trainers. Julia is overcome by her predicament, but does not disclose all to Jimmi, although he offers surprisingly good advice, encouraging Julia to be positive about her situation and take control.
Mac goes to an AA meeting alone, finding it easier to admit to strangers that he is vulnerable, cannot cope and is not even sure that he wants to.
Meanwhile, Elderly Joseph Makin was a POW in the Second World War and now a widow with no children. Joseph has received a letter telling him he had what he presumes is an illegitimate Son years earlier, that he had no idea of, with contact details. Mac agrees to help Joseph tell his Son he cannot have contact, as he feels like he is betraying the memory of his beloved wife, who suffered numerous miscarriages. Mac tries to intervene but John Stevens, Joseph's Son, arrives, with his teenage daughter, Louisa in tow. Louisa is the image of Joseph's dead wife; Gwen. John is actually Joseph and Gwen's Son born, and adopted, before they married, when Joseph was presumed missing in action. Joseph knows that his wife wanted them to re-unite; the family that they never had. Joseph reminds Mac to care for his family.
Julia and Mac argue constantly. Helen tries to offer support to Mac, but it is unwanted. Jimmi offers an ear to a tearful Julia.
Mac goes to an AA meeting.
'Fifteen Thousand Miles'
16th Sept
Mac and Julia are packed up and leaving the house for a last minute weekend to Patrick, Sally and Granddaughter Chloe's, that Mac has arranged. The smoke detector sounds as they leave, and they find Marcia drunk in the kitchen, toast burnt, eggs boiling dry. Mac is livid.
Mac phones and cancels the weekend away, which surprises Julia, but Mac suggests the house might burn down if they left Marcia. Julia tells Mac to go into work, and she will stay with Marcia. Mac admits to a dumbfounded Julia that he is finding it hard not to start drinking again, and that he went to an AA meeting. Julia had no idea and is concerned. Mac vows to tackle Marcia, and tell her a few home truths, to see if it helps her, as it did his own drinking problem.
Julia limps into work with her earlier ankle injury, as Sarah, Faith, and Jimmi are discussing Mac's impromptu day off. They are surprised by Julia's arrival, but delighted Mac is not with her. Helen catches the tale end of Julia's arrival, concerned by Julia's worries. Jimmi has VIP tickets to a swanky fundraiser, Sarah hides her interest.
Mac tells Marcia about his own alcoholism; Marcia does not admit her own problem. Mac corners Marcia as she fumbles for excuses not to go an AA meeting with Mac. Marcia says she has to go shopping for Julia; Mac vows to be there on her return, not letting Marcia off that easily.
On her return Marcia sneaks a bottle into the house and heads for a lie down.
Later Mac speaks to Julia on the phone and realises Marcia had no errands to run for Julia. Mac finds Marcia drunk on the bed. Mac is more annoyed at himself for not seeing this coming. Mac sobers up Marcia with coffee and admits the day he was so drunk he failed to diagnose Ciaran's meningitis. Marcia admits her own sorry tale, involving her granddaughter who almost choked; and the memory stilll upsets Marcia. Mac listens to Marcia's tale, but returns to the same conclusion about her drinking problem; denial.
Jimmi invites Sarah to his swanky fundraiser. Sarah is delighted and stunned, accepting, and showing her excitement when Jimmi leaves the staff room. Helen enters followed by Julia, who hints at her to leave. Julia tells Helen about Marcia's drinking and Mac's struggles, and how worried she is. Helen is concerned and suggests that Julia goes home.
Marcia appears to be accepting her alcoholism to Mac. They bond. Marcia recalls her past and clumsily admits how worried she was when Mac and Julia separated, mentioning Julia's abortion, which stuns Mac. Marcia immediately realises her mistake.
Julia returns home worried sick by Mac's silence all afternoon, but is confronted by Mac's knowledge of her abortion. Julia reminds Mac that at the time he had left her, and there three teenagers, for another woman.
Sarah searches for dresses in a magazine, asking Faith for her opinion on what to wear to the swanky fundraiser. Faith hides her jealousy and waltzes off. Helen enters shaken by an emergency with a patient. Jimmi offers an ear, but Helen asks for a cuppa instead. Jimmi is pleased to help, and build a few bridges with Helen in the process.
Julia is interrogated by Mac, who says some hurtful things, until Julia storms out of the house not prepared to listen to Mac's interrogation. Mac calls after her, gob smacked that Julia had an abortion and never let him know.
Meanwhile, Joan and Ray are preparing for a flight to see their daughter in Australia. Ray is excited. Joan is terrified at the thought of flying, and after persuasion admits this to Helen. Helen offers sedatives for the flight and some help with relaxation techniques. Helen normally prescribes aspirin for Joan, but Joan appears to be unwell for another reason. Joan has been taking her husband's blood pressure tablets by mistake, prompting her collapse from low blood pressure. Helen is on hand to call an ambulance, and the shock stirs her own bad memories which shake her. The flights are re-arranged, but with Helen's support, Joan is determined she will get on that plane next time. Ray wishes Joan had been honest about her fears earlier.
Mac admits his alcohol struggle to Julia. Mac faces Marcia and helps her admit her own drink problem. Marcia tells Mac about Julia's earlier abortion; Mac had no idea. Mac talks to Julia.

On her return Marcia sneaks a bottle into the house and heads for a lie down.
Later Mac speaks to Julia on the phone and realises Marcia had no errands to run for Julia. Mac finds Marcia drunk on the bed. Mac is more annoyed at himself for not seeing this coming. Mac sobers up Marcia with coffee and admits the day he was so drunk he failed to diagnose Ciaran's meningitis. Marcia admits her own sorry tale, involving her granddaughter who almost choked; and the memory stilll upsets Marcia. Mac listens to Marcia's tale, but returns to the same conclusion about her drinking problem; denial.
Jimmi invites Sarah to his swanky fundraiser. Sarah is delighted and stunned, accepting, and showing her excitement when Jimmi leaves the staff room. Helen enters followed by Julia, who hints at her to leave. Julia tells Helen about Marcia's drinking and Mac's struggles, and how worried she is. Helen is concerned and suggests that Julia goes home.
Marcia appears to be accepting her alcoholism to Mac. They bond. Marcia recalls her past and clumsily admits how worried she was when Mac and Julia separated, mentioning Julia's abortion, which stuns Mac. Marcia immediately realises her mistake.
Julia returns home worried sick by Mac's silence all afternoon, but is confronted by Mac's knowledge of her abortion. Julia reminds Mac that at the time he had left her, and there three teenagers, for another woman.
Sarah searches for dresses in a magazine, asking Faith for her opinion on what to wear to the swanky fundraiser. Faith hides her jealousy and waltzes off. Helen enters shaken by an emergency with a patient. Jimmi offers an ear, but Helen asks for a cuppa instead. Jimmi is pleased to help, and build a few bridges with Helen in the process.
Julia is interrogated by Mac, who says some hurtful things, until Julia storms out of the house not prepared to listen to Mac's interrogation. Mac calls after her, gob smacked that Julia had an abortion and never let him know.
Meanwhile, Joan and Ray are preparing for a flight to see their daughter in Australia. Ray is excited. Joan is terrified at the thought of flying, and after persuasion admits this to Helen. Helen offers sedatives for the flight and some help with relaxation techniques. Helen normally prescribes aspirin for Joan, but Joan appears to be unwell for another reason. Joan has been taking her husband's blood pressure tablets by mistake, prompting her collapse from low blood pressure. Helen is on hand to call an ambulance, and the shock stirs her own bad memories which shake her. The flights are re-arranged, but with Helen's support, Joan is determined she will get on that plane next time. Ray wishes Joan had been honest about her fears earlier.
Mac admits his alcohol struggle to Julia. Mac faces Marcia and helps her admit her own drink problem. Marcia tells Mac about Julia's earlier abortion; Mac had no idea. Mac talks to Julia.
Jimmi invites Sarah to a VIP swanky fundraiser. Sarah is delighted.
