I think it will be interesting to see how the show develops if/when Mac leaves. I don't think one character should be bigger than the show as a whole, so there's no reason why the show can't continue to get better as it has been recently.
I don't think Helen's departure made as huge an impact on the show as I was expecting. If anything this year has been one of the best for storylines since the show started!
Only time will tell...

Haven't been watching recently, so can't comment on the affair but it does seem a bit quick. It's plausible, however, that something had been going on between Mac and Kate for a while but the audience didn't know because they were being discreet (and because it can be extremely difficult to get into a passionate clinch over the 'phone). Maybe, to start with, Mac wasn't sure if his affair would last or couldn't make up his mind which woman to have and was making a special effort to spare Julia's feelings.
On a more technichal note, if an actor who plays a married character wants to leave a soap there tend to be three main strategies for getting rid of them.
1: Kill them off. (Fine if they don't plan to return but awkward if they change their mind later.)
2: Get them or their spouse to have an affair, however implausible that might seem.
3: Give the couple a new life in the Hebrides. (Fine if both actors want to leave.)
So, if we assume that Dianne didn't want to leave too and that they wanted to leave the door open for Christopher to come back, that didn't leave them much option.

hi - Its my first post on this forum. I have been looking for ages for a discussion board on doctors. I hope that mac has not left for good. It just won't be the same without him. Everything seemed to happen quickly ans surely he would not have given up the mill partnership that easily.
