Joe talks to Michelle about the other night, apologising for misreading the situation and drunkenly trying to kiss her. Michelle teases him, pretending to be upset at Joe's rejection, but Joe realises he deserves it.
Nick and Joe put the Emily misunderstanding behind them.
Meanwhile, Stephen Richmond wants his dying father to talk seriously about arrangements for the funeral, but Graham, a joke shop owner, just wants to have a laugh. When Stephen discovers Graham is leaving Dr Woodson £20,000 in his will, he is furious and accuses George of taking advantage.
George visits Graham, who insists he wants her to have the money as thanks for laughing at his jokes, rather than treating him with sympathy. Stephen used to laugh and joke with him, but since Stephen's mum died, he's so serious. George suggests Graham talk to Stephen about how he really feels.
Graham gives Stephen his parting gift - a box of comics. Stephen is furious that his efforts to look after the practicalities of his father's illness have resulted in nothing, while all Graham does is joke. He talks to George, admitting it upsets him that Graham won't take his impending death seriously. Stephen is about to donate the comics to the Mill, when Jimmi realises they are originals and worth a small fortune - this was Graham's last joke! Stephen admits he used to love practical jokes too, until his Mum died and Graham tried to protect him by ignoring the death and making everything fun. Now he wants to protect his father, but he can't because he's going to die.
Stephen returns to Graham with the comics, and father and son begin to compromise, Stephen allowing himself to laugh at his Dad's jokes, Graham promising to be serious about the future.

Jimmi meets his father at his house and instantly is greeted but seems apprehensive; he would have preferred to surprise Alun. They are soon discussing family matters but Jimmi does not appear too happy about the whole situation. Once Alun mentions Gareth, Jimmi is quick to relate the current situation to his childhood with Alun.
Things become heated with Jimmi telling Alun about a moment in his childhood which he is really struggling with and can’t handle anymore. He ends up cornering Alun and reducing him to tears, where Alun finally admits what had happened between them and apologises.
Jimmi tells Alun he must get help if he wants to marry Carol otherwise cancel the wedding, Alun agrees he will get help and still asks if Jimmi will come to the wedding. Jimmi with a great weight lifted off his shoulders is unsure and leaves with both needing time to think about what has just transpired and where they go from here.
Meanwhile, Barry and Jane get off to a bad start with an accident in the car park, which is witnessed by Michelle. Things are then more heated between the two in reception to which Michelle intervenes and decides to play matchmaker, despite Donna’s scepticism.
Once Michelle and Jane start talking it soon becomes clear that both patients have an interest in each other amid their slight frustration at not being very lucky in relationships, to which Jane reels off a long list of failed ones. Michelle and Barry then have a discussion outside about Jane, and Michelle gives Barry a push of encouragement. Barry then sets about having a discussion with Jane in the reception area, this doesn’t go too well initially but secretly Jane finds the conversation amusing when she has a moment to herself. However Barry doesn’t think its gone well at all and when in discussion with Michelle and Donna, Jane discovers the two have been conspiring together to which her reaction isn’t very friendly and Barry believes he has ruined his chance.
Afterwards Nick and Barry are discussing his situation and his recent failing with Jane has put him in a worse mood than before. Nick advises him to meet new people, which doesn’t seem likely in Barry’s eyes at the moment. However when he leaves the Mill he finds Jane waiting for him, it’s then she decides to give him her details for insurance purposes and possibly a date.

George arrives at work looking hassled; she’s only had 3 hours sleep looking after Bracken. Nick is off and she has to cover the home visits. Jimmi seems to be in a good mood, having turned a corner with his father. He jokes with George about getting too close to patients.
During house calls, George runs into Emmah, a disorganised Jamaican lady, who becomes light-headed and faints. After much persuasion, George convinces her to have a check up, but Emmah tells her she already knows she has Angina. She isn’t taking any medication and is happy to die when it’s her time. She saw her husband die slowly from cancer and doesn’t want to go through it again. She asks George why she feels the need to save her. Sometimes you have to learn to let go.
George checks on Jimmi after his day. He tells her he got too involved. She tells him she learnt to let go. She decides not to rush home to the baby and they go for a drink instead.
Meanwhile, Theresa is looking after her son, Johnny, who is in a Permanent Vegetative State. She takes his temperature; he appears to be getting worse. Exhausted, she persuades Jimmi to give her some sleeping tablets. Her husband, Henry, discovers Johnny has taken a turn for the worse and phones for the doctor. Theresa arrives home and isn’t very pleased about this and storms out. Jimmi makes a home visit and is told Johnny was injured in a rugby match. He suggests Johnny should be taken to hospital, but Henry says his wife won’t be pleased because it’s their son’s birthday. Teresa arrives home later and begins to make a birthday cake. A worried Henry calls the doctor but sees Theresa go upstairs and lock the bedroom door.
Jimmi consults with George and discovers she never recommended sleeping pills to Teresa. Theresa dresses Johnny in his best clothes and begins to mash a slice of cake into a feeding syringe. Jimmi arrives at the Lewis house and discovers the empty bottle of tablets. Breaking into the bedroom, they find Theresa with the feeding syringe; she couldn’t do it to her son. She blames herself for making Johnny play rugby that day. He didn’t want to play, but she persuaded him.
