'It's Not The Cough That Carries You Off'

Michelle arrives at the surgery and overhears Julia talking on her mobile about a cruise. Julia tells Greg, but she can’t go as the cruise is tomorrow. Donna catches her looking at cruises on the Internet and asks Michelle to persuade her, as she is capable of covering. Julia isn’t too pleased. Greg almost persuades her; he reminds her that the old Julia wouldn’t have turned it down before recently events with Mac, but she suddenly remembers the HSE inspection. Michelle finally convinces her, although Julia has already phoned her friend with the good news. Before she leaves, Julia asks Greg to check on Jimmi while she’s away. Greg asks why, but she doesn’t go into detail. Greg phones Jimmi, but just gets an answer phone. He leaves a message, but Jimmi is in his flat listening, staring at a neatly packed suitcase in front of him.
Meanwhile, Ron Wallis goes about his morning routine with a nasty smoker’s cough. His wife, Brenda, catches him sneaking in from outside, chewing a mint. Brenda is getting ready for the smoking clinic, but Ron tries to back out, but she persuades him to go. At the clinic, Ron blows into a monoxide detector but the reading is much higher than normal. Brenda accuses of him of cheating but he starts to struggle for breath. As he recovers, Ron swears to Joe he hasn’t smoked in three weeks. Ron continues to argue with Brenda as they leave and makes his own way home. Brenda steps behind a tree and takes out a cigarette. Joe catches her and isn’t impressed, but Brenda blows into the monoxide reader to prove it’s only a lapse; the reading is almost as high as Ron’s.
Returning home, she and Ron have another row. Brenda storms out but comes back to find him lying on the floor, gasping for breath. Joe arrives, having suspected the cause the high readings, and insists they leave the house. He explains that their fire has a blocked flue, causing carbon monoxide poisoning. Had they not attended the clinic, it might not have been detected. They make up and agree to continue with the clinic. Quitting smoking has saved them in more ways than one, but their budgie has died!
'No Smoke'

Nick is covering for Julia and Jimmi. Donna is on a power trip, Julia having left her in charge of the Health & Safety inspection. She’s even riding round reception in a wheelchair to test disability access! Trying to rearrange the computer monitor, it falls on top of her, giving her a nasty cut on the head.
Meanwhile, Jimmi has driven to Cardiff to visit his father, who he’s nervous about meeting. He tells his father he’s come having spoken to Carol. His father receives a phone call from work and asks Jimmi to hang on for his suit whilst he is indisposed. Whilst he’s gone, Jimmi tries to face his demons and looks at the cupboard under the stairs. He can’t do it and backs away, rubbing his hands manically as if washing them. He’s interrupted by the arrival of his sister, Kim. Kim persuades him to look round the house with her but he becomes increasingly agitated. They enter his old bedroom and Kim sees him rocking to and fro. He tells Kim how he locked his father in a cupboard to teach him what it was like for him as a kid. It didn’t work and when he turned up today, it was like nothing had happened. Kim feels guilty for leaving him when they were younger. He says it wasn’t her fault!
Meanwhile, Phil and Tracey Morrel are in court. Phil’s wearing a neck brace. Ronnie introduces himself as their replacement barrister; they’re not impressed. Tracey explains that Phil has been waiting nine months to sue the fire service for loss of earnings. George arrives as the GP supporting their case. She explains that they need to argue a stronger line, as numerous tests have shown no visible signs of injury to Phil’s back, but sees that Phil is not well and is sweating. He feels sick, but decides to go ahead with the case. They lose the case, which Tracey isn’t too happy about. They are just leaving when Phil collapses. George takes him to hospital, where they discover he has suffered kidney failure.
Tracey is still harping on about compensation, but Phil takes off the neck brace and say it was all a con and that he has everything he needs, that and his self respect. George explains that the tablets he took for his back pain may have led to the deterioration of his kidney.
'The Big Bad'

Nick and Greg are both bored, wishing something exciting to happen. They decide to clock off early and have a pub lunch, in attempt to spice up their day. Craig, an old friend of Nick’s comes to the surgery. He has a broken leg from a base jumping accident. Craig mocks Nick for not doing extreme sports anymore with him and convinces him to go to the jump club later that evening. Throughout the day Nick dreams of more excitement and Lunch gets cancelled as Nick gets caught up in the story of the day, saving Anthony from committing suicide. Nick makes a phone call, telling Craig he won’t be attending the meeting tonight, he’s had enough adrenaline for one day.
Meanwhile, Anthony, a young chav, lies on his bed. His mother, Maggie, comes in and demands he goes to the doctors, believing he is faking illness to skip school. Gywnn, a large, intimidating man enters the surgery and goes to Greg’s consultation room. Gywnn informs Greg that he can’t stop thinking about his son’s suicide and wants some pills for it; however Greg is reluctant to prescribe anything. Gywnn tells him that he went to his son’s funeral last week and has just come out of prison for beating his wife up. He is prescribed mild anti-depressants. Later in reception, Greg is discussing Gywnn’s case with Donna and realises that he may have just prescribed a suicidal man pills to kill himself with.
Maggie comes in with Anthony stopping Greg from going out after Gywnn. Greg tries to make his appointment quick with Anthony and Maggie, but Anthony refuses to let Greg examine him, until Greg quickly throws a pen at him, instinctively catching it, he winces at a pain in his side. Examining Anthony, Greg discovers a mass of bruises; Maggie gets angry and slightly violent. It gets out of hand, as Anthony and Maggie start shouting with each other in which Anthony storms out. Greg tries to calm the situation. In the corridor Nick bumps into Anthony, who yelps in pain. Maggie appears, shouting at him, and follows him down the corridor.
Greg asks Donna to ring Maggie and to tell her to take Anthony to A & E, whilst he goes to see Gywnn. Nick is out for a walk, where he sees an upset Anthony going by with a holdall. Greg arrives at Gywnn’s house and finds Gywnn on his sofa, motionless, but discovers he is simply listening to music with headphones in. Gywnn shows Greg his son’s suicide letter, which reveals that the boy was bullied for three years. Gywnn gets angry and makes threats towards the bully, adamant that he will seriously hurt the boy. Greg threatens to go to the authorities. Greg succeeds in calming him down and Gywnn starts to weep.Greg makes an appointment with Gywnn for tomorrow for the grief counsellor. On his walk, Nick hears a cry of pain and enters a cluster of trees where the screams came from; he sees a jacket and holdall discarded. In shock, he then sees Anthony’s feet, struggling. He has tried to hang himself. Nick quickly climbs the tree and cuts the rope down. Anthony is ok and taken to hospital. It is discovered that Gywnn, Simon’s Dad, had forced him to do it. Greg finds Gwynn and confronts him. Jackie, Simon’s mother, had given Gywnn the suicide note at the funeral, hoping that he would beat up the boy, or worse, in revenge. Sirens are heard in the background as Gywnn realises that Greg called the police. Gywnn understands his mistake and will take the punishment.
'Something Borrowed, Something Blue'

Jimmi drops off his sister Kim at Carol’s house. Carol is preparing for her wedding to their father Alun. She asks Jimmi to deliver carnations to his father. Jimmi is reluctant, but agrees. Jimmi and Alun clearly are at an awkward place in their relationship; the death of Jimmi’s mother is mentioned. The loss of his mother hints towards the reason for a breakdown of Jimmi’s and Alun’s father/son relationship, however the extent of which is still not made clear. Jimmi is introduced to Rees and then he meets his Uncle Llewellyn, who’s already drunk quite a bit and is tipsy. Alun’s agreement to see a therapist is briefly mentioned but the topic is brushed off. Alun suggests Jimmi should meet Gareth and get to know him. Kim and Jimmi share a heart to heart about the death of their mother and the acceptance that their dad is moving on. Jimmi and Gareth begin to chat and get on surprisingly well.
At the hotel the wedding guests begin to arrive. Alun shouts at Gareth for misplacing the wedding ring. Jimmi finds Gareth hiding in a cupboard. This triggers Jimmi’s memories of himself in the same situation when he was younger and how his father would abuse him. Jimmi concludes that Carol needs to know what’s going on with Gareth and Alun before the marriage takes place. After informing Carol she appears uncertain. She who then reluctantly asks Gareth the truth is revealed. Carol goes down the aisle knowing she won’t marry Alun she confronts him in front of the guests. Alun tries to reassure her but Carol knows the abuse is happening and leaves Alun. Alun realises that Jimmi is behind this situation and harsh words are exchanged.
'Flying Feathers'

Jimmi and Kim speak about the events that occurred at their father Alun’s wedding, which did not take place. Later Jimmi offers to drop Kim off at the station. Before they head home Kim pleas for Jimmi not to go see Alun but he has other plans. At Alun’s home the house as been trashed. Jimmi notices Alun as been drinking. They get into a serious argument. Jimmi has retrieved his belongings and is ready to leave but sees his dad is in despair. Jimmi offers a comforting hand on Alan’s shoulder. Jimmi insists Alun should see a therapist regarding his issues with temper and abuse. However Alun refuses. Jimmi can’t offer any more advice so leaves his father alone and departs from the house only to look back once.
At the Mill Health Centre Joe, Donna, George and Greg are chatting. Donna gets Joe to come to a lecture given by the health and safety officer Trevor. George tactfully chooses to go to Barbara’s home instead of the lecture. The lecture takes place Nick and Michelle are there. George enters late and Donna receives a small comical bruise thanks to Trevor. This humorous lecture takes place and it appears that Donna alone is taking it seriously as the others mock about the situation.
Meanwhile, Barbara is not happy to be in her predicament. She uses a walking stick since having a hip replacement and her granddaughter, Alison lives with her. Alison is on the phone to her boyfriend Ahmet and appears to be trying to sell goods that are possibly stolen. Alison has an argument with Barbara. Norah is outside the front door and tries to listen in on the argument. Norah want’s Barbara to be a guest of honour at a function but Barbara is not interested. Norah tells George about her concerns regarding Barbara’s reclusive manner. George Gives Barbara a home visit. It doesn’t go to plan and Barbara encloses her self further. Ahmet is at Barbara’s home collecting the items Alison as left for him but Barbara fears there is an intruder and she calls the police. Ahmet is at the police station.
Thanks to Alison’s statement Ahmet is released. Alison tells Ronnie that she is selling the items in order to get Barbara out of debt. Barbara admits she needs help to stop her getting into more debt. Alison and Barbara discuss the situation and it seems that a positive result has come from the honesty shared. George advises areas to receive help with. Later on Barbara and Alison get ready to go to the function that Norah has been inviting them to.
