I'm sure there is a thread on this somewhere but basically it is sort of a 'points' system.

If you like something a person says / posts (i.e. a good fic , fan art) etc. then you can exalt them which gives them one karma point. The alternate of this is the smite button which removes a karma point although I personally don't like the smite button.

Karma doesn't really mean anything though and is just a feature of the board.
