Marc can appear very uptight and distant, but he is soft underneath. He was adopted as a child and once contacted his birth mother, but they didn't keep in touch.
Before coming to Letherbridge, Marc was a major in the Royal Army Medical Corp. He served in Kosovo and had some terrible experiences. As a result, when he first joined Riverside Practice he was suffering from post traumatic stress.
Marc is very ambitious. He wanted to take over Riverside, but when he eventually realised that Mac wasn't going to retire, he asked Helen to join him in setting up a new practice.
Marc's love life has been very complicated. When he first joined the Practice he had a one night stand with Faith and things were difficult between the two of them immediately after. But after her rape she turned to Marc for support and he was an enormous help to her. Then he had a one night stand with Helen that went no further after Phil's death - but he may still hold a torch for her.

Rather a lot needed here, I think.
In February 2003 Marc was accused of rape by a female patient, when he resisted her sexual advances. Despite there being no physical evidence to these allegations, he was convicted, struck off and sentenced to eight years imprisonment. (The prosecution made a big thing out of Marc having had one-night-stands with two of his collegues, which may have influenced the jury's verdict!) Marc found prison difficult to cope with and, at one point, likened it to being in the Army, meaning that he had no control over what was happening to him. Fortunately for Marc a tv crew had been filming in Best at the time of the allegations and had accidentally recorded the incident in question; when Helen decided to do a little sleuthing she discovered the audio tape and a retrial was ordered, with Marc being released on bail (and later acquitted) after only a few weeks inside! During this ordeal, however, he appears to have suffered either a breakdown or a PTSD relapse. Between his release from prison and his acquittal he had a panic attack in front of Faith, was turned down by Helen when he asked if they could be together (although she remained very supportive). He eventually had to be talked out of suicide by George, when he was unable to cope with the uncertainty of his future and couldn't face the idea of going back to prison and never practicing medicine again!
Eventually, though, Marc was able to get back into the swing of things and rebuild his life. During the rest of 2003 and early 2004 his friendship with Helen continued but his hopes of romance were threatened when Helen was offered a job in Australia. She didn't get the job(George did), although, shortly after, she enjoyed a brief dalliance with a locum, Mike, which annoyed Marc and "cooled" their friendship for a while. Fortunately Mike went to Dublin with Kate, leaving Marc and Helen with the practice practically to themselves!
In May 2004 Helen lost two close friends and Marc, seizing the moment, jumped in and offered her his support, not to mention his undying love and devotion. This time she didn't turn him down and they had another crack at romance. Their happiness was short-lived, however, as Marc's half-brother, Robert, turned up with the news that their mother had been killed in a car crash.

(Sorry about that. Now where was I?...)
Feeling guilty about having previously cut contact with his birth mother, Marc made an effort to get to know his brother (with Helen's encouragement). His efforts seemed to be paying off when Robert revealed that he had accepted a job at an orphanage in Kosovo and was moving to the Balkans. He suggested that Marc should go with him and work at the orphanage hospital, as his personal experiences of the recent conflict would be invaluable in helping the children who had also been through it. Marc was tempted but refused, saying that he would be stupid to walk out on his relationship with Helen, when he had waited so long to be with her. Helen took a different view, however, believing that her feelings for Marc were not strong enough to warrant his turning down Robert's offer. When Marc challenged Helen, she told told him that, although she loved him, she wasn't in love with him and that their relationship wasn't a good enough reason for him to stay. The upshot of all this was that they had a blazing (and somewhat one-sided) row, during which Marc accused Helen of being cold and heartless, refused to allow her to explain her decision and declared that he'd been wasting his time trying to get together with her. He then stormed off to Kosovo, leaving Helen in tears.
Whilst in Kosovo, Marc appears to have calmed down slightly and even sent Helen a birthday card that year! He tried to move on romantically, over the next year and got engaged to a woman called Cara at some point. By November 2005, however, Marc had begun to wonder whether he and Helen might have had a chance after all and when a vacancy arose at the Mill, due to George's maternity leave, he returned to Letherbridge (followed by his fiancee). When he returned he discovered that Helen had been offered a job in Leeds and was planning to move up there, with her children. Although it didn't take them long to hit it off once again, the appearance of Cara, coupled with Helen's initial reluctance to admit her feelings threatened to keep the couple apart. At the eleventh hour, however, Marc's engagement fell through and Helen admitted that she was in love with him and that she wanted them to be together. After initially turning her down, Marc came to his senses, swept Helen off her feet and the couple left Letherbridge together, along with Helen's children. The four of them are currently living together in (or around) Leeds.

The fiancee's name was Cara, actually, not Carla. (Sorry about that.)

Just thought I should add this little bit: Marc and Helen's relationship seems to be going from strength to strength. When Kate recently returned to Letherbridge, she commented to Julia that they were very happy together and their relationship was going very well indeed.

Vital Statistics: Full name: Marc Eliot. DOB: Late November 1963. Height: 6 ft 2ish (He's slightly taller than Helen, when she's in heels, so this seems like a good guess.) Build: On the lean side. Hair: Dark blond. Eyes: Green.

Known relatives:
Pat Eliot: Adopted mother, died Nov. 2001 (cancer/heart attack) probably in her early 70s. Marc later said that they grew apart, which probably meant that, as he became more independent, they started to have less in common and, therefore, less reason to spend time together. (Happens in the best of families I suppose). She made a few appearances shortly before her death and, in the one that I saw, Marc got annoyed with her for calling him at work, probably thinking it was something trivial, when, in reality, she was seriously ill! However, he was very upset when he found out how serious her condition was and later admitted to being "shaken up" by her death.
Adopted father: Name unknown. (Can anyone help me here?) Died while Marc was in the Army. Apparently, Marc was closer to his father than his mother, suggesting that he might have taken his death harder than his mother's (it would be interesting to learn more about Marc's adopted family).
Interestingly, being adopted doesn't seem have "bothered" Marc in the way it "bothers" some soap characters. For example: 1) It's not something he's ever dropped into a conversation. 2) He didn't try to trace his birth mother until his adopted parents were both dead (and that was so he could get closure from his mother's death). 3) He made it quite clear to his half-brother that Pat Eliot was his "real" mother, rather than just the woman who brought him up.

Known relatives (contd.):
Rachel Wilson (Maiden Name? Any ideas?): Birth Mother. Never saw the episodes that she was in, so can't comment on character/history. Am assuming that she gave Marc up for "traditional" reasons, i.e. was an unmarried mother and that sort of thing wasn't done back then. Correct me if I'm wrong.
Birth father (Name?): No idea who he was/is. Was he mentioned when Marc met his birth mother? It would be interesting to know more about the circumstances leading to Marc's adoption. For example: Did his birth father "do a runner". Was there something (such as parental interference or a wife and kids) which prevented his father from "doing the decent thing"? Was Marc the result of a one-night stand? Or worse?
