In My Room Stirling Gallacher
Moving Story
Stirling Gallacher, aka Doctors’ George thought she was a commited Londoner until she worked in Birmingham.
London has been my home for 15 years and I couldn’t imagine being anywhere else, but I’ve fallen in love with Birmingham. I moved in to this flat two years ago with my son Ulysses, who was just a tiny baby then, after getting the job on Doctors – but I still owned a house in east London and would travel back and forth. Although this two-bedroom flat is rented, I actually need something a bit bigger now as I’ve got an enormous dog, so I’ve made the decision to sell up and move to the Birmingham area.
Like many people I was a bit snotty about moving to Birmingham when I got the job and thought it would all be a bit grotty. But it has changed so much over the past few years. The city centre has had a million pounds pumped into it and it’s packed with lovely restaurants, bars, theatres, and shops. Although I’m not a big shopper, we have even got our own Selfridges now!
My flat is in an old converted farmhouse on the outskirts and in front of me is a huge playing field, so the views great. I’m a country girl at heart really and I get up and go for long walks into the hills, which are 10 minutes away, with my dog Zeus. I’ve even started horseriding.
I was attracted to the flat because it’s nice and light and was decorated in the sort of colours I’d choose – greens, duck egg blues and creams. I’ve added some of my own touches but it was great to find someone with similar taste. I like handmade, one-off objects in natural materials, such as wood, glass, leather and stone. I’m not one for scouring the shops, but I tend to pick up most things when I’m somewhere like Ireland and go into a shop with locally made furniture or glassware.
I’m interested in sculpture and at one point it was a toss-up between acting and sculpture. If I had the space I’d like to start it up again. Something I have taken up again since moving here is knitting, and apparently it’s very trendy – Hollywood stars do it. I used to knit years ago, but it was when I got some exquisite handmade clothes for Ulysses after he was born that I thought I ought to give it a go. You can get lovely wooden needles now, and I love stretching out on the sofa and knitting while watching TV, or I knit when I’m on set in between takes.
I can still get back to London quickly and spent time there while filming the part of Jennifer Taylor Clarke, David Brent’s big boss in The Office. After that I was the wife to Anthony Head’s prime minister in Little Britain, which was fabulous fun. Now I’m off house-hunting for a place with a garden.
