I just found this part of a fic i wrote on my dad's laptop so i thought i'd post it. will add some more of Half a Heart or Ordinary Day soon
Prologue
“Team building?” Helen Thompson stared at Mac in utter disbelief, how could he even be considering this after the last time. Mac’s proud smile was wavering slightly at everyone’s non-existent enthusiasm even his wife Julia, who he had thought would defend his idea, was looking bored with the whole prospect.
“we are going” Mac said with a strong emphasis on the word are “to Ben Nevis” at this Sarah raised her head, she hadn’t been paying much attention
“I thought Ben’s last name was Kwarme” Mac through up his hands in exasperation and glared at Sarah who was looking at him innocently unsure of where she’d made her mistake, George looked at her trying hard not to giggle even Helen was smiling slightly despite her annoyance at the idea of a ‘team-building exercise’
“Sarah, did you do geography at school?” Mac’s voice was beginning to show his irritation but Sarah didn’t seem to notice it, although she was cowering like a schoolgirl who’d got a question wrong in a lesson in front of all her highly intelligent friends.
“Mac, take it easy. Sarah, Ben Nevis is the highest mountain in the UK” Julia smiled sweetly at Mac, but Sarah still looked terrified.
“ok now we have that cleared up, this trip is planned for next week. We will camp along the way, temps have already been arranged. George, you can bring Ronnie with you and Helen I’m sure Louise will look after Claire and Dan. So we’re sorted” he smiled triumphantly “now let’s get back to work people, we can talk about this fabulous trip later on during our lunch hour” with that he walked out of the room with everyone following him like infants following their parents. Everyone mentally trying to think of ways to get out of the trip.

Part 1
A week later, the mini-bus pulled out of the surgery car park carrying a group of 3 grumpy doctors, a grumpy solicitor, a grumpy receptionist, a grumpy practise manager and an annoyed doctor, all of whom were headed to Scotland to climb Ben Nevis. The ride was relatively boring with Mac trying to boost team morale by pointing out landmarks and talking about how wonderful the trip would be, but his staff weren’t paying an attention to him.
The mini-bus driver dropped the group and their luggage by the camp at the foot of Ben Nevis. Everyone apart from Mac, were staring up at the mountain in disbelief, they couldn’t believe Mac expected them to climb it.
“Isn’t it beautiful and imagine the view from the top” Mac smiled. The rest groaned. Behind them, they heard someone giggling; they all turned to see a girl stood there. Her long dark hair was tied in countless plaits, and her dark eyes were sparkling as she laughed.
”you the Letherbridge docs” Mac nodded and pointed out to each of the staff introducing everyone to the girl who smiled
“Hi all. I’m Kalista-Analiese. My mum Saffy agreed to lead you on this trip but she managed to break a leg leading another group, so she can’t do the job” Mac looked sad at this but the rest of the group brightened up, maybe the trip would be cancelled
“But I’ve been with her on a million of these things so I said I’d do it” Mac brightened up while the rest of them returned to their frowning.
“Are you sure Kalista-Analiese, I mean you don’t seem old enough, don’t you have homework or something?” Helen asked hopefully but the girl just smiled
“I’m home-schooled, my mum sets the homework and this is mine for the week. And you don’t have to call me Kalista-Analiese all the time, Kaliann’ll do” Helen frowned. She was going to be spending the next week climbing a mountain with a strange girl.
“Well let’s get hiking. Put your backpacks on peeps. I hope your wearing strong shoes and have water, oh and tents” she turned and revealed a big pack on her back. With that everyone started moving. After half an hour of walking Helen, George and Sarah were all moaning about their feet hurting, Kaliann was at the front with Mac chatting a mile a minute. George walked a little faster up to Ronnie and smiled sweetly
“Ronnie, my feet hurt. Can you help me please” George fluttered her eyelashes at him, Ronnie smiled, he placed his backpack on to George’s back and then allowed her to climb on. As Ronnie began to move forward with George on his back, George turned to face Helen and Sarah who were scowling with annoyance at how George was getting a free ride. George stuck her tongue out at her friends but turning back to watch the trail ahead while poor Ronnie walked with his wife, their backpack and her secret on his back up the hill.

Part 2
By nightfall, Ronnie was near collapsing under the weight of his wife and the backpack, climbing mountains while carrying people and bags was not something that Ronnie would recommend. Helen and Sarah were moaning constantly to Greg who for some reason had started walking with them, he wished that he had the energy to run ahead a bit but he knew that would cause him to collapse. Julia was wandering between groups trying not to let her boredom show by the sake of Mac who was happily talking on and on to Kaliann who was more interested in gossiping with Faith.
“Right, camp. Now let’s set up tents. Now does it”
Kaliann screamed so loudly, Ronnie dropped George who was extremely grumpy but out of fear of the girl, everyone set up their tents. Kaliann as expected did it quickest and set about making a small fire to cook on. When all the tents were set up, everyone gathered around the fire.
“Ok gang, do you know any camp songs” the group looked at Kaliann as if she’d grown another head.
“Ok I guess not. Oh well, you’ll learn quickly” she smiled
“I'm bringing home my baby bumble bee won’t my Mommy be so proud of me I'm bringing home my baby bumble bee - OUCH!! It stung me!!
I'm squishin' up my baby bumble bee Won't my Mommy be so proud of me I'm squishin' up my baby bumble bee - EW!! What a mess!!
I'm lickin' up my baby bumble bee Won't my Mommy be so proud of me I'm lickin' up my baby bumble bee - ICK!! I feel sick!!
I'm barfin' up my baby bumble bee Won't my Mommy be so proud of me I'm barfin' up my baby bumble bee - OH!! What a mess!!
I'm wipin' up my baby bumble bee Won't my Mommy be so proud of me I'm wipin' up my baby bumble bee - OOPS!! Mommy's new towel!!
I'm wringin' out my baby bumble bee Won't my Mommy be so proud of me I'm wringing out my baby bumble bee - Bye-Bye baby bumble bee!!”
Kaliann happily did the hand actions that went along with the song, but by the time she’d got to the final verse, George had turned a strange shade of green. Kaliann smiled
“Are you pink and green? Are you totally obscene? Can you pick your nose, With your stubby little toes? Do your armpits smell? Are you hairy there as well? Do your teeth fall out? Does your belly-button gleam? Does it let off purple steam? Is your earwax foul? Does your stomach groan and growl? Are your hands like jelly? Do they wobble like your belly? Do you look --- like --- me?”
Poor George was getting greener and greener but Kaliann and everyone else didn’t seem to notice, in fact they were all enjoying Kaliann’s songs.
“I don't want to throw up, I just feel like I do; I ate so much terrific stuff, today at the zoo.
I don't want to throw up, but my tum's kinda sick, From carmel corn and peanut chews, and corn-dogs on a stick,...
And ice cream, soda, and chocolate bars, And cotton candy, pink and blue;
I don't want to throw up, 'cause, "golly", if I do, We won't be goin' back to the zoo!
Oh, drat! Oh! ... SPLAT! ... Oh, phoo! I guess I over-ate at the zoo”
With that George ran off. Kaliann looked shocked and slightly worried. Helen ran off after George finding her sobbing behind a bush.
“I am so embarrassed” Helen frowned at George who started retching again.
