Here's a fic i wrote the other day. There's a slight warning with it, and that is that there's some swearing.
Two Docs, A Lawyer and a Little Lady
“it’ll be fine, I’ve looked after Bracken before y’know” Ronnie said, rolling his eyes slightly as his wife, for the millionth time, suggested that it would be better that she didn’t go out after all. George smiled nervously
“Oh I know you’ll be fine darling” she gently pecked his cheek “but it’s those two I’m worried about” turning in the direction of Jimmi and Greg who were stood in the kitchen trying to find where George had hidden the beer. The two gave up after only a few minutes, having opened and reopened every cupboard and the fridge a couple hundred times in hope that some beer would magically, and ended up flopping down in chairs looking like sulky children, Ronnie laughed
“I think those two’ll need more care than Bracken” the corners of George’s twitched up in to something that slightly resembled a smile. Greg and Jimmi seemed to have heard the comment though and were pretending to look insulted. “George go. It’s been months since you’ve seen Helen, and you’ve got your mobile in case of emergencies” Ronnie took his wife’s hand and led her to the door; he kissed her and then gently pushed her outside.
”see you later” Ronnie called before wandering back in to the kitchen, Greg and Jimmi had perked up in the few minutes he’d been gone and he soon spied the reason, cans of beer stood on the table but before they could even think about drinking them, Bracken started screeching from her nursery. The three rolled their eyes but they all walked upstairs and in to the room. Bracken was sat in her cot, holding her toy bunny rabbit and, as Ronnie noticed, looked far to awake to have just woken from her nap.
“Dada” Bracken announced when she saw Ronnie, dropping the pink and orange bunny she was holding, to hold her arms out to be held. Ronnie smiled at her and stroked her hair, before lifting her out and turning to face Greg and Jimmi.
“Do you remember Uncle Greg and Uncle Jimmi?” he asked softly, Bracken shook her head and giggled
“Yep. Egg and Dimmi” she said happily causing Ronnie to laugh hysterically, so much so he had to grip his daughter that little bit tighter to keep from dropping her.
“No sweetie, Gr-eg and Jim-ee” Ronnie said sounding out the two words, but Bracken just looked at him unsure of what she’d done wrong.
“Egg and Dimmi” she said again, grinning. Ronnie laughed again giving up. Greg and Jimmi didn’t look too amused with their new names.
10 minutes later, the four had made their way downstairs after the struggle of changing Bracken’s nappy, something the two-year-old did not enjoy especially given that it had been Greg and Jimmi that had undertaken the challenge. When they reached the living room, Ronnie placed Bracken in her playpen and sat down with Greg and Jimmi to watch any football that may be on the TV. It was only just as kick-off was about to happen that Bracken decided to remind them that she was in the room and that she wanted attention, she did this with the aid of her toy drum and xylophone, toys which Helen had given her goddaughter saying that her two had loved these toys and that you hadn’t really experienced parenthood until she heard you child making music – what she had failed to mention was that these toys are a damn nuisance especially when you had a headache or a job you really had to get on with. When this method of noise making failed for her, Bracken called for her daddy knowing that he could never not give in to his child. This worked, minutes later she was on Ronnie’s knee in front of the television, babbling away to herself.
“How are we meant to hear the game?” Jimmi asked grumpily, straining to hear what the commentator was saying. Ronnie laughed
“By turning up the volume” Ronnie said with a smile bouncing Bracken on his knee, but she had other ideas and was trying to find a route to climb down. She soon found in and had disappeared from sight within seconds. Ronnie looked at Greg and Jimmi
“let’s go find her” Ronnie said standing up, Greg and Jimmi looked confused and slightly annoyed but followed Ronnie in the search around the living room and kitchen for Bracken, who despite being a little wobbly, could moving extremely fast when she wanted. She was eventually found sat near one of George’s bags, her lower lip trembling slightly
“Mama” she said tearfully, looking up at the three men with her large brown eyes which were shining with tears. Ronnie gently picked his daughter up and cuddled her close
“Mummy’s gone to party with Helen. Do you remember Auntie Helen, she gave you some toys. Mummy’ll be back soon though ok baby?” Bracken shook her head
“Ok” she said softly. Jimmi and Greg looked at each other confused
“Ronnie, why does she shake her head when she means yes?” Jimmi asked, acting as if it was the strangest thing in the world.
“She likes to” Ronnie answered simply, carrying his daughter back in to the living room. Greg and Jimmi followed close behind and soon all four where settled together of the sofa. Until Bracken decided this activity was boring, and toddled over to her playpen, Ronnie had left the door of it open, knowing that eventually Bracken would go back in. ten minutes later, Bracken called out again
“Dada play” she demanded, causing Ronnie to walk over and sit down inside the playpen which resulted in much laughter from Greg and Jimmi. Still Bracken seemed amused for a few seconds until she realised she had two other potential playmates in the room.
“Egg play. Dimmi play” she demanded. Minutes later, Greg and Jimmi were sat inside the playpen to, grumbling every few minutes, totally unsure of why they’d gone. Bracken happily handed them out pieces of plastic pizza and other foods, which Ronnie pretended eat, Greg hide it behind his back but Jimmi just left it in his lap. Eventually Ronnie, Greg and Jimmi bored of the game and the sounds of the football on the TV were luring them back to the sofa. Jimmi stood up but he didn’t realise as he did so that Bracken was near him, and by complete accident he knocked the little girl over causing her to burst in to a torrent of tears. Ronnie instantly picked her up and cradled her, checking her over. Luckily she only had a tiny graze of her arm
”your okay aren’t you Brack?” Ronnie asked his sniffling child, Bracken shook her head but whispered ‘yes’. When Ronnie had wiped away her tears she turned towards Jimmi who was sat on the sofa with Greg. Bracken glared at him. Ronnie carried her over to the sofa and cuddled her as he settled back down to watch the footie. Every time Jimmi moved, Bracken frowned at him, watching him ever so carefully. Ronnie stroked her back knowing that the soothing motion usually lulled her to sleep. Ten minutes later, when he managed to draw his gaze from the TV, he realised that Bracken had in fact nodded off to sleep which confirmed to him that she had most likely been playing in her cot earlier.
“She’s asleep, so don’t make much noise” Ronnie whispered to Greg and Jimmi. The two grinned; they turned the volume down now that they could have it at a more human level. They became totally engrossed again until Jimmi reached forward for another beer, as he pulled the ring pull he knew what was going to happen, he closed his eyes as a spray of foam and beer billowed out of the can. Ronnie almost swore but he was stopped by the grizzling from Bracken who didn’t take kindly to people waking her up. She glared at Ronnie, Jimmi and Greg, that look was one thing that had definitely come from her mother. Jimmi started to try and clear up the mess, muttering apologies. Ronnie barely paid any attention to his apologies. He was more interested in calming Bracken down.
“well done genius, it’ll take forever for her to get sleep now” Ronnie said, rolling his eyes knowing full well that there was absolutely no chance of them being able to watch the rest of the game in peace, a fact that was extremely annoying given it was shaping up to be the match of the century.
“P*** off” Jimmi said grouchily, as he looked at his football shirt which was drenched with beer.
“P***” Bracken said happily causing Ronnie to groan. He looked at Bracken, who was the picture of innocence.
“No darling, don’t say that word” Ronnie told his daughter, but Bracken ignored him happily chanting the word over and over which caused Greg to laugh which earned him a look that really could kill from Ronnie.
“How come she can say that but she has problems with Jimmi?” Jimmi asked, still slightly annoyed at his new name.
“Dimmi p***” Bracken told him, causing Greg’s laughter to get even more hysterical even Ronnie couldn’t help smiling at that. And if he dared admit it even Jimmi had a slight smile. Something on the TV made them jump; the game really was getting interesting. The three men watched intently even Bracken turned to watch. The blow of the refs whistle caused a torrent of language from all three men, all of which Bracken found interesting.
“what the f***!” Jimmi exclaimed looking shocked at the situation.
“F***” Bracken exclaimed, even copying Jimmi’s movement. Ronnie looked absolutely horrified at this. He glared at Jimmi, and Greg who had started laughing again. Ronnie moved so that he was knelt in front of Bracken
“Sweetheart, you’ve got to promise me you won’t say that word again, okay?” Ronnie looked at his daughter, seriously but all Bracken did was laugh, she was like her mother in the respect that she had a habit of hearing only what she wanted. Ronnie frowned; Bracken toddled off and decided that climbing Jimmi would be a fun game. Jimmi didn’t really agree but he did lift her up and cuddle her slightly, evidentially Bracken had forgiven him for the earlier accident. Ronnie had other ideas as to why his daughter had suddenly latched on to Jimmi; he believed it was the child’s mischievous streak wanting to learn new words that she wasn’t meant to. Greg was still engrossed in the football, but he had noticed the cute scene behind him.
“Eh Jim, you’ll be wanting one of them with Sarah” the men turned sharply and Bracken sat up alert. George stood in the doorway smiling “I guess I was wrong, you three seemed to have done a good job, but I believe it’s now this little lady’s bedtime” George walked over and gently lifted Bracken off of Jimmi’s lap, something Bracken protested
“Dimmi!” she whined, causing George to look slightly confused, but she was smiling and her eyes twinkled wickedly
“It’s Bracken’s nickname for Jimmi” Ronnie said in way of explanation. George’s smile widened
“Well, I’m sure everyone at work’ll love that. Clever girl” she said, kissing Bracken’s forehead, as she walked from the room with Bracken in her arms. 10 minutes later she was downstairs again, looking at the damage in the room.
“Ok you three, if you want to continue watching the game I want this room how I left it” the three slowly started working all the time watching the screen. George rolled her eyes
“Stop it. If you do it that way you’ll cause more damage” the men sat down and looked at each other grinning cheekily. The silence was broken a few seconds later by a sound through the baby monitor, softly but totally audible Bracken said ‘f***’ George looked angry.
“Did I just hear my daughter swearing?!” she asked, not needing an answer “I never should have left you three to look after her” she was practically hysterical. She swatted the backs of the three men’s heads causing protests from both Ronnie and Greg.
“I don’t care whose fault it was” through the baby monitor Bracken could still be heard sleepily mumbling the two new words she’d learnt.
“All three out, now” George shooed all three, who were looking at each other and mouthing the word Pub hoping to be able to catch the final part of the game. When they’d left George flopped down on the sofa, and sighed.
“well, at least she’s still in one piece, I suppose” she whispered to herself “but I think next time it’ll be safer to let Sarah or Faith sit”
