“daddy, I’d like you to meet someone” Bracken Woodson said with a smile as she grabbed hold of her dad’s hand and dragged him through the stream of parents and children that filled the medium sized school playground. Ronnie allowed himself to be led, he liked to be involved in his daughter’s life and knowing who her friends were, was a big part of that although he was sure he’d met them all and he knew he daughter hadn’t mentioned any new children in class. They stopped by a boy who looked to Ronnie to be about ten years old but he didn’t dwell to much on this, he was to busy looking around for the familiar face of one of Bracken’s best friends. Bracken was looking up at her dad smiling
“dad, this is my boyfriend Matt” she said, her smile widening. Ronnie’s head moved sharply so he could take a good look at the boy. Surely his daughter hadn’t just said what he thought she’d said. Sure he knew that little girls of that age had friends who were boys and occasionally pretended to have boyfriends but this was something else. His eyes were wide with shock, as he looked from the boy to his daughter.
“say something daddy” she told him, before turning to Matt “he’s not usually like this” a small smile played on Ronnie’s lips. This was one of those times when Bracken seemed to be a lot older than her ten years but as he thought these times never lasted long.
“it’s nice to meet you” Matt said softly, causing Bracken to stiffly a giggle. Ronnie was torn between being shocked and amused. This didn’t seem real. He smiled at Bracken
“well we’d best to getting home” and to Matt he added “it was nice to meet you to” and with that he took hold of Bracken’s hand and led her back across the playground which was slowly becoming emptier. He’d always known that one day Bracken would grow up and get boyfriends but he hadn’t really expected it to be this soon. He looked down at her as she skipped merrily by his side, she was still very much his little girl.
“me and Matt are going on a date, daddy” she said, as they passed a couple holding hands in the bus stop. Ronnie had seen them and couldn’t help but think that one day that was going to be Bracken, but he shook the idea away quickly. That wasn’t going to be for a while yet. She was still a little girl
“me and Matt might kiss Daddy” she said as they crossed the road. He had to force himself to keep walking, he knew he couldn’t stop there. The idea of his little girl kissing was one he didn’t want to dwell on. So he shook it from his mind.
“I’m going to marry Matt daddy” she said suddenly as they passed the old church, not stopping her skipping for a second, but Ronnie almost stopped dead in his tracks. He knew little girls dreamt of getting married to but to him that seemed like something that was going to happen in a million years. She was still his little girl.
“me and Matt are going to have babies, daddy” she added as they walked passed a woman pushing a pram. Ronnie was trying not to listen to her, he didn’t want to think of her growing up. she skipped slightly ahead of him.
by the time they got to the end of their street, Ronnie was panicking over losing his little girl to Matt. The day he told his wife he didn’t want her seemed to be part of a different life. Ronnie caught hold of Bracken’s hand and held it tight as they walked together down the street as if to keep hold of her, to keep her his little girl. She didn’t mind, as the stepped on to their drive, she stopped, and smiled up at him
“but I don’t think we’ll do those things for a long time daddy” she said, watching his face curiously. Ronnie smiled, and knelt down next to her, twitching her nose in the manner he always did,
“I’m glad” he said softly, gently kissing her forehead “because I’m not ready for you to grow up yet” he added but it was to late she’d bounded off and was out of earshot but he knew she’d understood. She was his little girl.
