This is set around 2 weeks after the current episodes however the canon is only up to yesterday’s episode.
I've not abandoned I Hope You Dance either but this idea wandered in to my head and will not get out.
Part 1
“And you’re absolutely certain it’s safe?” Mrs Amelia Dixon asked, peering nervously at Dr Zara Carmichael. This was becoming quite a common question from patients attending the Mill Health Centre and Zara was getting rather fed up with it. Mrs Dixon was her seventh patient of the day and she had already been through this five times. The other patient – Mr Davidson – had already seen her a few days before and hadn’t needed it clarifying again – thankfully. Zara took in a deep breath in order to steady herself and stop herself snapping at the women.
“We have had the all clear from the authorities” Zara said. She was hoping that the paranoia over the outbreak would be over soon or she would be driven absolutely insane by it. She just wanted to get past the whole thing now. Cherry was out of hospital and was pretty much back to her old annoying self and everything else was returning to normal so she didn’t want to have to relive everything every day. Every time she had to discuss the outbreak her mind was immediately flooded with images of herself and Daniel. She hated having to relive that moment because it reminded her of how much she didn’t have and made her feel extremely foolish.
“Yes but is it really safe?” Mrs Dixon asked again. Zara could see that this wasn’t going to be easy to persuade this lady and she closed her eyes briefly for a moment. Part of her wanted to tell the woman that in fact it wasn’t particularly safe and she would recommend running for the hills just to get rid of her but she knew she couldn’t do that no matter how much she wanted to.
“Of course it is” Zara sighed “Would you like to discuss the matter with the practice manager?” she added. She may not have been able to get rid of the women but she could palm her off on Julia. That wasn’t perhaps the most professional attitude to take but she wasn’t sure she could put with too much of this.
“Yes that might be a good idea” Zara could physically see Mrs Dixon brightening at the idea of having to meet with the practice manager. There was a glimmer in her eyes that hadn’t been there before and she sat up just that little bit straighter in her chair. Zara sighed and used the phone in her office to ring through to Julia and tried to explain the situation as best she could without being insulting towards her patient but while still make the situation clear to her colleague.
“She’ll pop along in a moment” Zara said finally as she put the phone. She turned her full attention back to Mrs Dixon and fixed the women with one of her most professional serious looks – the one that she hoped would strike fear in to people’s heart but also earn their respect.
“Now what was it that you needed?” She added what she hoped was a comforting smile to appear approachable.
“Well” Mrs Dixon appeared to be thinking and Zara took another steadying breath. It was becoming apparent to her that Mrs Dixon was just another of those curious people who wanted to see the site. She was getting sick of that too – in the last week Zara had seen at least four of these patients – although she was certain there were more just that those had had better cover stories prepared. “I’ve had a bit of a cough these last couple weeks” she said finally.
“A cough – any other symptoms?” Zara asked. But Mrs Dixon was saved from having to think any more by a knock at the door and Zara breathed a sigh of relief. She called for whoever it was to enter and she practically beamed when she saw Julia stood there.
“You said you wanted to see me?” Julia said, stepping further in to the room. Mrs Dixon turned towards the practice manager.
“Yes Mrs Dixon was a little worried about the safety of the surgery” Zara said, looking at Julia and giving her a sort of exaggerated eye roll which she hoped would be enough to explain the situation to Julia. She watched as Julia showed a slight flicker of recognition.
“I wanted to ensure that the surgery was perfectly safe.” Mrs Dixon said completely ignoring the fact that Zara had spoken. Zara rolled her eyes once again but didn’t say anything she didn’t see any point in that. Julia however had raised her eyebrows.
“I’m sure Zara has already explained that we have received an all clear from all of the authorities” Julia said and Mrs Dixon gave her a sort of blank look. Julia looked over at Zara who nodded her head. Julia twisted her lips in thought “Well we’ve had independent tests which have all confirmed that the surgery is safe for all and I would not have reopened had it not been fully safe for patients and staff”
Mrs Dixon nodded, apparently placated by this although Zara wasn’t entirely sure. Julia made her goodbyes and then stepped back out in to the corridor. Mrs Dixon turned her attention back to Zara but she seemed to be a little disappointed that she was no longer in the company of the manager.
“So where were we?” Zara asked, almost sensing where this was going to go. Mrs Dixon began to stand up and Zara tried to hide her expression behind a careful mask of indifference.
“I think I have everything I wanted” Mrs Dixon said and left the room almost as soon as she had spoken. Zara sighed. She couldn’t help but be relieved that that was over but she was also more than a little annoyed that Mrs Dixon had taken up an appointment which could be been used by someone else.
Zara looked at the computer screen and with a slight smile realised that her next few appointments were home visits. She couldn’t help but enjoy getting out of the surgery. She stood up and started towards the reception area. She gave Mrs Tembe a smile as she stepped through. At her car Zara paused and raised her eye brows in shock as she saw something was clipped under her windscreen wiper. She slowly released it and with a start realised that inside the sheath was a single red rose. She pushed it up a little bit and studied the flower. It was one of the most perfect roses she had ever seen and with her middle finger she gently stroked the delicate perfect petals. She looked at the sheath to see if there was anything on it to reveal who had placed it there but she found no clues. As she slipped it to her car placing the rose on the passenger seat she couldn’t help but wonder if it was possibly a gift from Daniel. The very thought brought a smile to her face.
