'Touching A Nerve'
Airs Monday, May 1 2006 at 14:05 BST on BBC One
Mac presses Nick for a decision about the partnership, so Nick requests a meeting with Mac, Greg and Julia. He admits to causing the death of a young patient after misdiagnosing a severe asthma attack - this resulted in him being suspended from the medical registrar for 12 months, and having to retrain. Mac is furious that Nick kept this from them, and tells Nick they will have to reconsider the partnership offer.
Mac takes his frustration out on Julia, accusing her of not checking out Nick's background before hiring him. Julia thinks he's overreacting, but this just makes Mac more angry and he storms out, leaving Julia confused at his attitude towards her. Outside, Mac makes a strange phone call to someone it seems he can talk to more than Julia...
Meanwhile, David Kelling, who suffers from panic attacks, sees Ronnie for advice - his brother is suing him after being left reliant on a wheelchair by an accident at the family business, and David is worried it will bankrupt him. Ronnie isn't convinced Karl's injuries are as bad as he claims, but George, his doctor, refuses to get drawn into the case.
Ronnie visits Karl and tries to get him to drop the case, but Karl is clearly still bitter and determined to make Karl pay. Ronnie senses there is a family feud beneath the hostility and persuades David and Karl to talk, but they begin to argue and David suffers an attack. Ronnie calls George who calls an ambulance.
George talks to Karl while Ronnie accompanies David to hospital. The brothers admit that David stole Barbara, his now wife, from Karl just before the accident. David knew Karl was cheating on her, and didn't want Barbara to be hurt - then they fell in love. It was when David told Karl they were engaged that Karl stormed off in the company car - he blamed David for not checking the brakes, but admits he actually just lost concentration. He does need the wheelchair, and can't work, but not because of his injury - because he can't work without his brother.
George and Ronnie persuade the brothers to meet, and when Karl realises Barbara is pregnant, the brothers decide to bury the past and reconcile.

George and Ronnie invite Greg and Rico to dinner, unintentionally making Faith feel even more alone. Rico and Greg narrowly avoid reopening old wounds when they brush on the story of the Cigar Store Indian argument, but are taken aback when George and Ronnie pick up on this and start play arguing over the amount of clothes she owns but never wears. When Greg and Rico have left, George makes it clear she is no longer joking - she tells Ronnie he's going to regret his comments about her wardrobe.
Jimmi is feeling restless and in need of a change. He tells Greg he is going to ask Mac for the partnership, unaware it has already been offered to Nick. Greg breaks the news, upsetting Jimmi who realises he was never going to be considered due to his age. Greg points out that Jimmi doesn't have the finances to invest in the Mill, angering him even more that everyone obviously thinks he's just messed up his life and will never be a suitable candidate.
Meanwhile, Julia takes Mac away from work for the day, to play golf while she is on a course. Mac plays with lonely stranger Terry Warner, who reacts strangely when he discovers Mac is a doctor. Terry tells Mac about his wife Nicola, who suffered a lot of pain from MS, and how she was always in control in the relationship - Nicola wanted the freedom to have affairs, so Terry buried his own feelings to please her. He asks Mac when you can know it's gone too far, and Mac finally gets Terry to admit that he helped Nicola die.
Mac realises that Terry regrets not standing up to Nicola, but reassures him he can't change anything now. Until suddenly, Mac realises Terry is talking in real time, and Nicola is actually at home now, taking her own life.
Mac persuades Terry to do what he wants for once, and gets him to agree to try to stop the woman he loves leaving him - they rush to the house, but are too late to save Nicola who is already dead.

Jimmi is resentful of Nick; he’s hoping to be considered for a partnership and is worried Nick will win favour with MAC. Greg is supporting Jimmi and Nick feels in limbo.

Julia has been thinking about this and suggests a compromise – they offer Nick a permanent position as an associate, not a partner. Mac thinks that’s very sensible and is pleased.
She also suggests that they go away for the weekend. Mac is sorry but he can’t – he’s already arranged to go away for a golf weekend. Julia a bit put out, considering he played golf all day yesterday!
Meanwhile, Karen and Patrick are due to be married in two weeks but both are restless.
He is having sleepless nights because he told Karen he had a vasectomy because he couldn’t bear to tell her he has a low sperm count. The reason his first marriage failed.
Karen is desperate because she is pregnant. She slept with an ex and knows it can’t be Patrick’s because of his snip.
Who is going to tell the truth first?
Jimmi sees them both separately and as their stories unfold he realises that a little white lie could help them both…
So Karen keeps schtum and Patrick is delighted that they’re having a baby!
