S08E02: 'Nobody's Perfect'
Airs Tuesday, April 25 2006 at 14:05 BST on BBC One
Julia and Mac call Greg in for a meeting, and announce that they need a new partner - they decide to offer it to George, although Julia's not convinced she'll jump at it.
Greg and Rico are still angry with each other over the Cigar Store Indian argument, but Greg later apologises, deciding to compromise for the sake of their marriage.
Worried about Nick and curious about Elizabeth's departure, George gets Ronnie to take Nick for a drink in the Icon Bar. Ronnie is taken aback when Nick gets drunk and suddenly confides all about their relationship, the abortion, and his cold and bitter feelings towards Elizabeth.
Meanwhile, Alcoholic Ian Reed arrives at his soon to be ex wife's house, wanting to see his 12 yr old daughter Ella. Ian insists he's been dry for 4 months, and is worried about Ella, but Susan warns him that she has an injunction, and that if he tries to see Ella again, she will have him arrested.
Greg sends Ella to hospital for tests, worried that her heart valve defect may have led to acute heart failure. At the hospital, Ella admits she has been playing football in an attempt to feel the same as her friends, which has caused her condition to deteriorate. Greg urges Susan to contact Ian, as the situation is serious and Ella will need to be operated on, but Susan refuses to let him know what is happening, despite Greg's attempts to persuade her. Greg is tempted to tell a worried Ian himself, but eventually gets an excuse when Ella says she wants her Dad and asks Greg to get him.
Greg visits Ian, but finds him about to hit the bottle, worried about Ella and fed up with Susan pushing him away. Greg tells him about Ella, but Ian starts doubting himself and throws Greg out.
Ian turns up at the hospital, insisting he's not been drinking, but Susan refuses to trust him until Greg warns her that Ella may not survive the operation and that this may be the last time she gets to see her Dad. Susan agrees to give Ian the benefit of the doubt and lets him see their daughter, where he apologises for everything in the past and promises to make it up to them.

Mac and Greg offer George the partnership, but George is furious at the offer, telling them they are insensitive imbeciles to think she'd want to spend time away from Bracken when she's finally bonding. Irritated at George's reaction, Mac and Greg discuss Nick and Jimmi, but decide that Jimmi is too young for the responsibility. They decide to offer the partnership to Nick instead, but rather than jumping at the chance as Mac expects, Nick too seems unimpressed and will only say he'll think about it.
Meanwhile, Roger Hallett, independent candidate for the Selly Heath ward, is furious when rival Graham Kinny shows him a newspaper article in which Roger's mental health is brought into question. He confronts Nick at the Mill, convinced Nick must have leaked confidential information about a psychotic episode in the past to his mate Graham, but Nick insists he is innocent. Roger asks Nick to go on the radio and deny the rumour, determined not to let Graham win, but Nick refuses to lie, despite agreeing with Roger over the unfairness of prejudice against people with a history of mental health problems.
At lunch with Graham (a mate from rugby club) Nick mentions the article and suggests Graham consider the radio show, but Graham isn't prepared to help, and Nick begins to doubt his belief that Graham had nothing to do with the leaked information.
Nick visits Roger's wife Claire to confirm he won't be able to help, and Claire breaks down, upset at how hard Roger is working and that he doesn't deserve the prejudice.
At the election, Graham wins and Roger accuses Nick of helping to ruin his career. Carol breaks up the argument, admitting it was she who leaked the information about Roger's history to Graham, as she was worried about the stress he was under and wanted him to lose to save his health, and so they could get back to being a couple. Graham gloats as Carol wonders if Roger will ever forgive her.

Julia forces Mac to clear the air with George, then has a go at Greg and Mac for upsetting George and probably messing up with Nick - all they can do now is wait for Nick's decision about the partnership.
Jimmi accidentally calls Donna 'Sarah'. Later, Greg takes Donna to lunch, and learns a little about her background and family. Donna asks Greg about Jimmi, and Greg confirms they were close. Back at the Mill, Donna tries to talk to Jimmi, telling him she knows he's missing Sarah, and that she's always available for a chat, but tells her to mind her own business. In his room, Jimmi finds a photo of Sarah which leads him to an episode of OCD, but then he gets control of himself and phones a number in his little black book, making a date that he hopes will take his mind of missing Sarah.
Janice Cook's day starts falling apart when she hears her kids' school is shut, and she can't find a babysitter for bickering Anna and Fred. At the surgery for holiday jabs, Faith is shocked to hear that Janice recently split from her husband. She leaves to get supplies, while Janice goes to try phoning round for a sitter again, leaving the bickering children alone. When Faith returns, Janice is back, and the bickering gets worse as Faith administers the injections, feeling rushed by Janice's obvious frustration.
After they've left, Faith discovers she has given the children the wrong injections, having mixed up the syringes. She rushes to the Cook house to explain, only to find a desperate Janice about to leave the children alone to go to work.
Faith admits to her mistake, and Janice is furious until Fred admits it was he who swapped the syringes.
Janice apologises to Faith, admitting she doesn't know how to cope with the children who have been bickering and fighting with each other since her husband left. Faith suggests Janice talk to the children about their father and why he left.
Janice reassures Anna and Fred that their father loves them and that she won't leave them too, and the family promise to take better care of each other from now on.

Mac presses Nick for a decision about the partnership, so Nick requests a meeting with Mac, Greg and Julia. He admits to causing the death of a young patient after misdiagnosing a severe asthma attack - this resulted in him being suspended from the medical registrar for 12 months, and having to retrain. Mac is furious that Nick kept this from them, and tells Nick they will have to reconsider the partnership offer.
Mac takes his frustration out on Julia, accusing her of not checking out Nick's background before hiring him. Julia thinks he's overreacting, but this just makes Mac more angry and he storms out, leaving Julia confused at his attitude towards her. Outside, Mac makes a strange phone call to someone it seems he can talk to more than Julia...
Meanwhile, David Kelling, who suffers from panic attacks, sees Ronnie for advice - his brother is suing him after being left reliant on a wheelchair by an accident at the family business, and David is worried it will bankrupt him. Ronnie isn't convinced Karl's injuries are as bad as he claims, but George, his doctor, refuses to get drawn into the case.
Ronnie visits Karl and tries to get him to drop the case, but Karl is clearly still bitter and determined to make Karl pay. Ronnie senses there is a family feud beneath the hostility and persuades David and Karl to talk, but they begin to argue and David suffers an attack. Ronnie calls George who calls an ambulance.
George talks to Karl while Ronnie accompanies David to hospital. The brothers admit that David stole Barbara, his now wife, from Karl just before the accident. David knew Karl was cheating on her, and didn't want Barbara to be hurt - then they fell in love. It was when David told Karl they were engaged that Karl stormed off in the company car - he blamed David for not checking the brakes, but admits he actually just lost concentration. He does need the wheelchair, and can't work, but not because of his injury - because he can't work without his brother.
George and Ronnie persuade the brothers to meet, and when Karl realises Barbara is pregnant, the brothers decide to bury the past and reconcile.
