'The Best For Martin'
Airs Tuesday, May 30 2006 at 14:05 BST on BBC One
Having been unable to get hold of Julia since Mac's departure, Greg and Faith are worried when she doesn't turn up to work - her car is gone but they haven't been able to track her down with friends or family. George offers to come back full time to cover Mac, and Faith says she will act as practice manager until they know what is happening. Nick speaks to Faith about her eye problem, trying to persuade her to talk to Greg, but Faith avoids the issue, insisting that as practice manager, it won't be an issue. Later, Donna takes a message from the garage saying Julia's car is ready to be collected. Realising she could be at home, Faith and Greg call round, but there's no answer... Inside, Julia is slumped in a depression.
Knowing Rico is bored at home, Greg suggests he visit a lonely elderly patient of his to listen to her stories. Rico visits Violet who tells him about her days as a Union Rep at a famous firework factory - the first factory in Letherbridge to be run by a woman. Realising the building is about to be demolished, Rico and Violet decide to make a stand and save the factory.
Meanwhile, George is concerned when she sees a patient Martin, who has learning difficulties, upset at the supermarket where he works. She speaks to his supervisor Irene, who admits that Martin's mum has died, and he is moving away to live with his aunt. Later, Irene drops Martin home and is worried when his aunt Gwen, who believes Martin isn't capable of coping on his own and treats him like a child, insists she is selling his mother's house, and that he won't be taking up a job offer in Lancashire. Irene goes to George, who finds out through Ronnie that Martin was named as sole beneficiary in his mother's will, but that nothing was stated about his care when they met with the solicitor.
Suspicious, George and Irene speak to Gwen, who insists Martin went with her to the solicitors on a certain date. Irene realises Martin was at work on that date, and confronts Gwen - it turns out she got her son to pose as Martin, but she insists she is doing what is right for the boy. She tries to force Martin into the car, but Martin, realising Gwen was stealing, insists they stay and talk to the police. Gwen is taken away for questioning while George arranges for someone from the advocacy service to visit Martin, who wants to stay in Letherbridge and keep working.

Still reeling from Mac's departure, Nick and Jimmi both offer to buy into the practice, but Greg doesn't want to rush into any big decisions.
George goes round to Julia's house and uses Bracken as an excuse to get Julia to let her in. She tries to talk to Julia but Julia is unresponsive and just tells George to leave.
Rico and Violet stage a demonstration protest at the fireworks factory, supported by Violet's old friends. Greg turns up, worried about Violet's health, but Rico insists she has come alive with this new goal, and promises to look after her. Later, the police arrive to stop the demonstration, but Violet is determined not to be stopped and lashes out at the police who have no choice but to arrest them. At the station, Violet's health deteriorates.
Meanwhile, Chris is delighted when his partner Debbie agrees to try for a baby, but Debbie warns against getting carried away, aware her age could be a factor. Later, she sees Nick who confirms her fibroids have returned, despite an operation in the past to remove them. Nick reassures her she should still be able to conceive, but Debbie insists Chris mustn't know.
Debbie tells her mum Joanna what the doctor said. Joanna thinks she should tell Chris, but Debbie is scared he will leave her just like her last boyfriend did. When Debbie faints, Nick insists on an ambulance. Joanna wants to tell Chris what is happening, but Debbie makes them both promise to keep it a secret. While Debbie tells Nick she had an abortion years ago and now might not get another chance to have kids, Joanna secretly calls Chris.
Chris turns up at the hospital where Joanna fills him in on Debbie's past operation and the current situation. Furious Debbie lied to him, Chris storms off. Joanna talks to Debbie, who has finally decided to tell Chris the truth, but when she realises Joanna has beaten her to it, she tells Joanna to leave. Meanwhile, Chris visits Nick for information on the chances of them conceiving, and Nick persuades him to talk to Debbie. Chris returns to the hospital where he and Debbie accept that possibly being unable to have kids of their own isn't the end of the world, and agree not to keep secrets from now on.

Angry with Rico, Greg has let him stew overnight in a cell. When he realises Violet was also arrested, he rushes to examine her, and sends her straight to hospital with suspected pneumonia. Rico is released having been charged with a breach of the peace, but his relief is short lived as Greg reminds Rico that Violet is seriously ill thanks to his irresponsible behaviour.
Donna visits Julia, hoping to cheer her up with some homemade food, but accidentally lets slip that she knew about Mac and Kate. Julia is furious and throws her out, but we see a spark of the old Julia again.
Meanwhile, Geoffrey sees Jimmi, worried about his heart - he's suffering stress at the hands of his correspondence chess opponent who goes by the name of Nemesis. Jimmi, noting Geoffrey suffers from angina, suggests an appointment with the cardiologist, but Geoffrey refuses, going on to blame his disabled sister Carol for adding to his stress and holding him back in life.
Later, Jimmi sees Carol who has an infected pressure sore, while Geoffrey meets with their handyman Keith, accusing him of being Nemesis. Carol arrives back home to overhear Keith admitting it, and Geoffrey telling him he's fired. She interrupts, telling Keith she has decided to move in with him after all. Geoffrey is disgusted to realise they are a couple, but when Carol suggests he is jealous as he is attracted to Keith himself, Geoffrey collapses.
Jimmi arrives, suspecting a heart attack, but Geoffrey admits he faked the collapse to teach Carol a lesson, expecting Jimmi to cover for him. Jimmi however tells Carol, and when Geoffrey tries to blame Keith for playing mind games with him, Carol admits she is actually Nemesis - she has been secretly beating Geoffrey at chess as revenge for all his insults. It also turns out Carol is the one with the money and is the one supporting Geoffrey. Carol decides to go ahead with moving in with Keith, and decides to sell the house, but they promise to give Geoffrey half of the proceeds and help him set up in a flat of his own.

Rico visits Violet in hospital to say sorry he let her get ill, but Violet insists she doesn't regret a moment and wants to know if they succeeded in saving the factory. Rico promises to find out, but as her health deteriorates and Violet fades, Rico has to decide whether to tell her that despite all their efforts, the factory has been demolished. During Violet's last moments of consciousness, Rico lies that they succeeded, and Violet dies thinking they saved the factory she loved.
Faith visits Julia who finally talks about how betrayed she feels by Mac. She suggests she is thinking of leaving the Mill, until Faith confides in Julia that she has been diagnosed with progressive Retinitis Pigmentosa. Seeing her friend's distress, Julia's determination to survive returns.
Meanwhile, Ronnie drops off some donations at the new charity shop opening today in Letherbridge, and meets pompous manager Janice, and her two new volunteer Millie and Edgar. Janice is clearly jealous of the quick friendship that develops between her workers and quickly sends Millie away to work in the stockroom where a new fan is being fitted. Janice is annoyed when Mille complains of feeling ill, convinced she is faking illness to stop her getting close to Edgar. When Edgar invites Millie to a game of bowls, an upset Janice stalks off to the stockroom.
Ronnie realises he has accidentally donated George's jacket which contained her credit card, and calls the shop - Janice answers from the stockroom, but Ronnie is concerned when she suddenly screams. He arrives at the shop to find Janice convinced she has seen a ghost. When Janice makes a comment about Millie attention seeking, Millie retorts with some brutal home truths about Janice's behaviour, causing Janice to run out upset. Janice admits to Ronnie that she has been lonely since her husband died, and Ronnie persuades her to talk to Millie and Edgar.
While Ronnie examines the stockroom, Janice admits to Millie that she is jealous of her ability to make friends quickly. Ronnie returns having found their ghost and the cause of Millie's illness - the ill fitting fan is generating low frequency sound resulting in vibrations. Edgar invites a grateful Janice to join him and Janice for their game of bowls.

Faith, as practice manager, makes a mistake due to her failing vision. Later, during a staff meeting to discuss cover for Julia and Mac, Julia arrives looking fantastic. John is worried about a cold, saying he has to be careful after his aneurysm, but Jimmi insists he is fine now - he is more worried about Rita who looks run down, but she insists she'll cope. Donna is embarrassed when John flirts unashamedly with her on reception in full view of his wife, and not in the best taste - she speaks to Jimmi who he explains that an aneurysm can cause total lack of sexual inhibition. Back at home, Rita tries to get John to do some work for the family business, but he insists he's too ill and picks a fight before disappearing out to lunch at the Icon. On her way to get a sandwich, Donna tries to leave when she sees him, but John corners her and becomes suggestive. Rita, looking for John, witnesses this and runs off upset. Donna follows to explain, and takes Rita back to the surgery to calm down.
Rita admits John has changed since the aneurysm and that she isn't coping, so Donna sends her in to talk to Jimmi, but when Jimmi suggests she see a counsellor, Rita leaves, insisting she's fine. Donna, determined to help, does some research on aneurysms and goes to Jimmi with her suggestion that John is depressed and in a suppressed state of shock after nearly dying. Rita and John return to the surgery, Rita having given into John's insistence that he is still ill and needs antibiotics. As John flirts with Donna again, Rita collapses, causing John to rush to her aid, dropping all acts. As she recovers, he quickly reverts, until Rita announces he wants a divorce. Donna speaks to John, making him realise how much pressure he is putting on Rita by refusing to help with the business, and John admits he is terrified, having realised how vulnerable he is after confronting death.
