Joe arrives at the surgery and throws Donna and Greg into a panic as he heads straight for Nick’s room. Greg tries to stop him but is relieved when Joe apologises to Nick, rather than hit him. Nick accepts his apology and Joe explains what happened when he talked to Emily. She’d told him about the boy and that it was a casual fling – Joe clearly would love to get his hands on Karl Morris to tell him what he thought of him. Nick asks about Emily’s decision to which Joe explains that of course they’ve discussed a termination – it’s the sensible thing to do. Nick and Greg try to ensure that it is Emily’s decision and not Joe’s – Joe assures them that he’s being sensitive about it.
Later that morning Donna finds Joe searching through the phone book but before she can find out why she is distracted by Michelle who tells her about her afternoon date with Dr Chris Taylor. She’s expecting that he’ll take her for lunch somewhere posh and then try to take her home for a quickie on the sofa – Donna tells her to be firm with him to which Michelle replies that she’s not complaining! That afternoon Michelle meets Chris in the local park. He comments on his surprise that she works in a local surgery and is not at some cushty private hospital or saving the starving millions in Africa with a hunky Doctor. This all leads up to him asking if she has anyone special in her life – Michelle simply replies that if she did, she wouldn’t be there. Chris tries to take her to a restaurant which turns out to be closed down and so they end up eating fish and chips in the park. Michelle has enjoyed the walk and conversation however. As the date comes to an end Michelle decides to invite Chris back to hers for hot chocolate – she even has a big furry rug. Chris smiles and says that he’d love to drink hot chocolate on her rug but it’ll have to be another day – he wants to take things more slowly – some things are worth waiting for. Michelle is impressed and flattered as they snog before he walks off.
Joe phones Emily’s college and pretends to be from a music equipment hire company – trying to gain financial compensation against some damaged equipment – the name he has on his invoice is Karl Morris. The lady on the other end of the call quickly gives him Karl’s address. Joe arrives at a grand house, intending just to talk to Karl about his responsibilities. He is perturbed to find a scruffy Pete Docherty wannabe answer the door – it’s Karl Morris (18). Joe is furious to discover that Karl can’t even remember who Emily is and has to be reminded, it gets worse when Karl suggests that he’s not necessarily the father of the baby – she could be going with half the college – and he’s not going to get any cash or time out of him – he’s got better things to do than support some pram-faced tart!!!! Joe sees red and lunges at him in fury – they struggle as Karl tries to fight back – but then a police car pulls up. A while later we see Joe being slung into a Police cell – Joe calls for attention – you can’t keep me here, I’m a doctor!
Meanwhile, Phoebe Billington (20’s) and her boyfriend Lester Clarke (20’s) arrive at the surgery bickering. She’s come for a tetanus jab and didn’t want him tagging along and fussing. When Michelle comes to call her name, Phoebe is irritated by Lester’s purposely loud comment that she should ask about her migraines also. Michelle ascertains that Phoebe’s tetanus is still up-to-date and starts to ask about the migraines. Phoebe is reticent and insists that they’re not so bad - Lester was just fussing. She then casually tries to ask about a repeat prescription for her contraceptive pill – this is the real reason she has come to the surgery.
Michelle sees in her file that Jimmi was going to change Phoebe’s pill this next time as she was on a strong pill that also treated her acne (un-named Dianette) – however as her acne has now cleared up she needs to swap to a normal weaker pill. Phoebe gets agitated and insists that she has no problems with it. Michelle insists on fetching one of the doctors but Phoebe walks out instead. Michelle realises that she’s upset about her acne and tries to reassure her that there are other things she can try. Phoebe won’t be swayed and insists that nothing else works – if she gets spotty again, Lester will leave her – she can’t risk it. Phoebe stalks out observed by Donna.
When they get back to their flat Lester tries to ask Phoebe about what Michelle had said – he thinks that her migraines and bad moods could be linked to the pill and is concerned. Phoebe refuses to discuss it with him and instead snaps back. They are interrupted by the arrival of Lester’s younger sister Maddy (16) who has come to go shopping with Phoebe. Lester leaves for work. Maddy shows sympathy with Phoebe – Phoebe says she’s glad that they’re mates and the Maddy understands about the pressures that girls are under – men don’t understand. Phoebe persuades Maddy to go to the surgery to ask for the acne pill – outside she emphasises that she needs a mate she can rely on and she can’t let her down. They are observed by Donna who happens to be showing an elderly patient out.
Maddy reluctantly heads inside and Donna sends her into see Greg. Greg is surprised when Maddy asks for the acne pill and explains that she doesn’t need it –he will only prescribe the usual combined pill. Greg asks Maddy a few health questions to assess the risk factors for her – she is alarmed to be asked about the risks of stroke and to hear about possible minor side effects such as mood swings, weight gain and bloating. As Maddy leaves Greg comments to Donna about her thinking she had acne. Donna’s interest is piqued and she checks the medical files. Donna tells Greg that she thinks Maddy was getting the pill for Phoebe but he thinks she’s overreacting and dismisses her theory.
Donna phones Michelle but like Greg she thinks that Donna is imagining things. Meanwhile Maddy returns to the flat with the wrong prescription – Phoebe has the beginnings of a migraine which she’s trying to fight off - she goes mad at Maddy – ranting that she’s useless. But then Phoebe starts to feel worse – her eyesight blurs and goes dizzy. Maddy panics believing Phoebe to be having a stroke. Maddy rushes outside in a panic and finds Donna who has hesitantly arrived outside. Maddy admits that she lied to get the prescription and asks Donna to help Phoebe. Donna recognises a migraine but calls Greg to check her over. Meanwhile Lester arrives back and is furious to discover that Phoebe had asked Maddy to get the pill for her – Phoebe insists that she just wanted to look nice but he walks out past Greg who’s on his way in. Greg praises Donna for following her hunch and being right about Maddy.
Greg prescribes a strong painkiller and once Phoebe starts to feel better he admonishes her for trying to get hold of more pills illegally – Maddy apologises too and Greg and Donna leave. After they’ve gone Phoebe apologises to Maddy for being such a cow and Maddy tries to convince Phoebe that real beauty is on the inside. Lester gets back and Phoebe swears she’s going to come off the pill, even if it makes her spotty and she loses him. Lester tells her that her acne never bothered him anyway – and she spends as long in the mirror now as she used to – but she’s not as happy as she used to be. He wants the old Phoebe back. They kiss gently.

Early morning Emily creeps out of the house so that she doesn’t have to face her dad, Joe. At the surgery Joe talks to Greg about his experience in the Police Station – what’s happening to him? Greg comforts that he’s under a lot of pressure. In reception Michelle drops some papers and Nick bends down to pick them up – he gets a twinge in his knee. It prompts him to invite Michelle to his Health Club where he’s going swimming later. Michelle declines – she’s got something on. At lunchtime Michelle and Donna chat in the toilets as Michelle does her make-up – Donna thinks Chris must really like her to take her to Gina’s – very swanky – Michelle doesn’t correct her mistake.
That afternoon Greg and Joe regroup – Joe decides that he’s got to deal with the problem and leaves Emily a message to say that she should come home early – he’s cooking dinner. Meanwhile at Gina’s Restaurant Michelle meets up with Ferdy – she’s clearly quite anxious about the date and orders a large white wine. Ferdy recognises that she needs cheering up and so quickly hands over a present - a large gift wrapped box which contains a slinky designer dress. Michelle is delighted but feels bad that he went to so much effort. She finally plucks up the courage to tell him about Chris – Ferdy tries to be pleased for her but there is a hint of jealously also. He holds her hand suddenly. Michelle gets back to the surgery and is forced to show Donna the dress – Donna is really impressed – she should hold onto Chris – he’s got it bad!
Emily gets home from college and starts scrolling through the contacts on her mobile. When Joe gets back laden with food shopping, he tries to be friendly but is met with hostility – how can she show her face at college ever again after what he did – he made a complete idiot out of himself by attacking Karl – he’s an embarrassment! She storms out. After she has calmed down Emily finds Joe in the kitchen cooking – he apologises for making things worse but Emily still has more to say – he never listens, he doesn’t consider her, he doesn’t know her, he never asks her what she wants, he’s ruined her life and so she’s phoned mum and she’s flying over from Boston right now – and she’s not happy!
Meanwhile, Nat Adams (24) is a good looking fitness freak who organises Club Events. He’s going out with pretty student Milly Moreton (20) and spends a lot of time at Milly’s student flat which she shares with best friend and plain Jane, Clare Stapleton (21). Clare doesn’t like or trust Nat as she finds him to be a bit shifty – she even suspects that he takes and deals drugs. Milly won’t listen and doesn’t seem to care – all she cares about is that he’s attractive and cool. Nat is clearly causing a rift in their friendship. Meanwhile we see Nat in the bathroom – no longer the easy-going lad, he uses the noise of the shower to cover a phonecall – he tensely arranges to meet someone later that day. When he comes out of the shower he finds Clare going through his jacket pockets – she has found a small bottle of pills and caught in the act she tries to confront him about what he’s taking. Nat rails at her and accuses her of being jealous of him and wanting Milly all to herself. Clare bursts into tears but when Milly enters both Clare and Nat say that everything is fine, leaving Milly rather suspicious. Later that day Milly tries to ask Clare about what happened – did she make a pass at Nat? Does she fancy him herself? Clare denies it and rushes out of the room in tears. Nat goes swimming at his health club and is not happy to bump into Dr Nick West. Later Nick spots Nat in the Juice Bar and reminds him that his door is always open should he ever want to talk – Nat says he can handle things his own way. Nick then later observes Nat buying some pills off a shifty looking woman –he confronts him to ask what they were. Nat refuses to say but insists that what he’s on isn’t enough – he’s trying to fight it but he can’t. Nick begs him to come to the surgery to sort it out but Nat just storms off. Meanwhile Milly apologises to Clare and insists that they should never let a man come between them. Milly assures Clare that she knows what Nat is – she’ll be fine. At the Health Club Nat is in the toilets looking distraught – he has the early signs of Iritis – a complication of his disease Ankylosing Spondylitis. Clare and Milly start arguing again and Clare tells Milly that she found pills in Nat’s jacket – Milly goes mad at Clare for being so nosy – the pills could have been anything. Clare runs out upset. Milly tries to phone Nat but has to leave a message.
That afternoon as Clare returns to the flat she bumps into Nat – she asks him what the pills were and he diverts the question – but then suddenly his vision goes blurry – Clare notices but Nat refuses to explain. He heads inside to find Milly. Milly has been stewing about Clare’s comments and asks him why he didn’t respond to her message – sometimes she wonders who he loves more – her or himself?! Nat assures her that the pills were simply protein pills from the gym – and they weren’t even his. But Milly doesn’t believe him – Nat starts to look uncomfortable and then suddenly gets a sharp pain in his eye – Clare enters and Nat finally asks them to call the doctor – Nick West. Nick arrives and diagnosis Iritis – he decides to admit Nat to hospital – Milly asks Clare to come along for support – she agrees. At the hospital Nick explains that it might take a few weeks for the Iritis to clear up completely but he should be fine as long as he is vigilant about watching out for it in future. Nick encourages Nat to tell Milly the truth about his condition but Nat doesn’t feel confident to admit to anyone but his family that he is sick – he doesn’t want to see himself as a sick person. Nat appeals to Nick to put pressure on Dr Howard his consultant, over whether Nat can have Anti-TNF drugs. Nick has to remind him that they will only prescribe it for someone with the most severe disease and Nat doesn’t qualify – his rigorous exercise programme keeps it under control. Nick reminds Nat that it’s about time he started to come to terms with his condition. Would he rather people thought he was a drug addict – Nat thinks maybe he would. Finally however he admits the truth to Milly and explains about his AS – it’s a form of arthritis which is particularly prevalent in men.
Milly is shocked that Nat has arthritis and that he has been lying to her – Clare apologises for misjudging him though of course there was no way she could have known. Milly stomps out upset – Clare goes after her to see how she is. In the corridor Clare has some harsh words for Milly – she said that she really liked him, is she going to dump him now because of his illness and because of one lie – is she really that shallow? Milly tells Clare to leave her alone but does finally speak to Nat – she admits that she might not have gone out with him much longer anyway – she thought he was shallow – but now that she knows there’s more to him – that he’s more interesting… well… they kiss.
