Beneath the Skin Discalmer - the characters belong to the BBC Although time had stopped to her the movements of her family could be heard around the house. Just like normal. She placed the phone back on stand and turned her head towards the window. Not that anything was happening out there, quite the opposite really. But it helped her conceal her tears. Down the stairs her husband sat puzzled. She had been gone ages. Was something wrong? He made his way upstairs to their room. His hand slowly reached for the handle and turned it. He then cautiously opened the door and found her sat on the end of the bed in a daze looking out the window. He approached her carefully. “Duffy? What is wrong? You okay?” She looks up without her usual sparkle in her eyes. They were watery and blank. There was no smile either. No colour in her face. Nothing. Something was wrong. She finally spoke. “Dad died...” “Oh Duffy. Come here.” Was the best he could mange. He walks to her and opens his arms. She gladly goes to him shaking tears streaming down her face. He could feel her grip on him tighten. Although her dad didn’t get on with him, as no one was good enough for his daughter he was aware how close she was to her father. When he was diagnosed with cancer it took her months to come to terms with it. He is only 59; too young for cancer she’d tell him. Now a year on he’d died. What shocked him was that she had admitted he’d died instead of telling him they’d got it wrong. But this was the last thing she needed. So many thoughts were whizzing through her mind but she felt numb. Numb with pain. She couldn’t make sense of anything. Nothing was connecting. She could feel her husband push her blonde hair out of her face as she just buried further into his shoulder. This couldn’t be happening not now. Is all she could think. He was too young. It was 3 months ago that they knew he wasn’t going to pull through. He knew it too. After months of trying Duffy had fallen pregnant. They went to tell her dad but although he was happy his eyes showed his sadness. Then he spoke. Shocking both Duffy and her mum Kate. But not Duffy’s brothers Luke and Jake, they knew as well as her dad. “If it’s a boy can you name him after me? So you have a way of remembering me?” “Dad! You will be here to see him or her. Don’t talk like that. Please. ” “Lisa. You know I won’t. I’d also like to make a video for you all.” “Dad please Stop it!” Luke stepped in. taking Duffy by the shoulders and moving her back slightly. He then turned her to him. Looking in her eyes then hugging her. Knowing she knew all too well that he wouldn’t make it but was refusing to accept it. Andrew stood in the background watching the heartbroken family, watching his wife brake down. After that day she went to see her dad everyday until last week when her mum, brothers, her dad and Andrew told her they didn’t want her to see him get any worse. For two reasons, one she was pregnant and seeing that was by no ways helping and two her been the youngest her brothers and parents still treated her as a child. Even though she was married with two children. Now what they all had dreaded had happened. Andrew had no idea how Kate or Duffy was going to cope. Although her parents were spilt up they were still very close. “Andrew can you tell the boys? I don’t think I can do it.” “Of course. I know you don’t want to here this but. You have a scan in two hours. Will I re-book it for another time?” “No. I don’t think dad would have been impressed if we didn’t try and carry on.” “No I don’t suppose he would of. I’ll go tell the boys.” He kissed her and went off down the stairs. She was trying her hardest to be strong for her family. But was all over the place one minute she thought she could cope then the next she couldn’t. But never the less she knew she had to go for the scan. Her dad would have wanted that.

Part two.
He turned over in the bed to see her lying still asleep red rims around her eyes. Telling the story of last night. The Bin full of used tissues also told said it all. The boys took the news better than they both thought. But that really had more to do with them not understanding. Once Andrew and their uncle Luke had explained all Peter said was that he was glad he’d stopped hurting. And Jake just nodded. The funeral was few days after his death. Duffy was adamant that the boys weren’t to go. She refused to let her sons go to it at such a young age. Well Peter is only 8 and Jake only 4. It wasn’t long before she started to stir then wake up. It wasn’t the morning’s afternoons or evenings she found difficult. It was the actual day-to-day activities she knew she had to do. Ironing brought back memories of her teenage years, arguing over the ironing load she was given. Story telling made her remember when he read to her. Even tying Jake’s shoes brought tears to her eyes. Anything on Television would make her remember something. It was just so hard to carry on. She didn’t need reminding he was gone! But something kept reminding her against her wishes. Charlie was been a saint. Having gone through the same thing he was often round helping her cope and giving Andrew helpful pointers. He’d sit with her while Andrew would take the boys out swimming or to play football. He’d just talk to her. Ask her things Andrew wouldn’t dare. He also made her talk about how she felt and refused to let her try and shut herself off. Knowing she would try. He got her to talk about the baby her fears, Old memories that she had of her father and let her cry. Also updating her on work. Stepping up the stairs he couldn’t hear any movements of their room. He reached the door and opened it. She was standing at the mirror looking at her refection or rather her baby bump. At 14 weeks the baby was showing now. He wasn’t sure if she was coping with the effects of the pregnancy but knew Charlie spoke to her about the baby and he was sure that she wasn’t shutting out the baby. She turned to him and managed a smile then said something he wasn’t really expecting. “When can I go back to work?” “Erm. I don’t know. Isn’t it a bit soon?” “No. I don’t think it’s doing me any good moping around here. Is it?” “Well no. Not really but..” “ No buts Andrew. I’ll go in tomorrow and speak with Charlie and Dan. Yeah?” Andrew smiled and walks up to her hugging her. Telling her that maybe it was for the best. It wasn’t that she wanted to return to work. But that she thought it was for the best. Been the baby of the family meant that her brothers were very protective and she was sick of them calling her all the time to make sure she was alright. It made her think that they were expecting her to just brake down. But truth be told it was them that weren’t coping. They kept focusing themselves on either their family or her. Luke was the worst. He wasn’t round a lot but called a lot and his wife was really worried. Jake had flung himself straight back into work and was driving his teenage daughter crazy making sure he knew exactly where she was who she was with what she was doing. All the time. No one had told her this but she heard Andrew on the phone and worked it out by listening into phone calls and piecing it together. She wanted to help them but was just coping herself. Her mum was the same as Duffy just coping but was trying to help her sons too. Andrew was glad Duffy was coping better but was getting increasingly worried about her brothers. He got on well with them and knew too well that they needed to talk to someone about how the felt like Duffy was doing with Charlie. But they were like closed books. He himself had offered to be an ear but they wouldn’t budge. He wouldn’t dare tell Duffy that they weren’t coping but had a sneaky suspicion she knew already. It wasn’t that she wasn’t worried it was more that she knew fine that she couldn’t cope with trying to help her brothers too. She made sure that they were okay by listening in on more and more of Andrews phone calls. But had a feeling she was still taking on too much.

Part three.
Walking through the doors to A&E never seemed so aghast before. Despite this she carried on. She couldn’t quite place why she was so afraid. Maybe it was because her dad died here. Or something sub consciously bothering her. She was relieved to see a familiar face smiling at her. Her face must have shown how she was feeling because the smiling face soon turned concerned. Walking up to Duffy she looked pale, and edgy. That or scared. Her blonde hair glittered in light, the cold breeze making it sway at her shoulders. A thick jumper suitable for the cold winter weather hid her baby bump. Her long jeans and knee-high boots also help hid the bump by giving her added height so she looked thinner. She walked over to her and hugged her. “How you doing?” “Alright Chloe. Are you busy today?” “Not really no. For Once. You coming back to work?” “Yes. Need to discus it with Dan and Charlie so thought I’d pop in any see you all.” “Yeah. How are the boys?” “They’re doing good. Up to mischief as usual.” “Aww. Good to hear.” “I best let you go. Don’t want to get in trouble with Charlie for keeping you from working.” She smiles and walks to Charlies office nervously. Knocking on that door made her feel like an 8 year old in trouble from the head master for the 1st time. The only thing was she still couldn’t think why. Charlie knew the knock he smiled to himself and turned to open the door. He saw her face through the glass she looked petrified. He stood up and opened the door smiling. He was glad to see her smile back and relax somewhat. “You alright Duffy?” “Yeah just a bit nervous.” Sitting down she felt much more relaxed deciding it must be the baby making her so nervous. But talking to Charlie always made her relaxed. Made her see a more bright side of things. It wasn’t long before Dan was at the door. He too was smiling as if to calm her down. “Hello Duffy you alright?” “Yes fine thanks.” The conversation was very dull as expected by all three of them. But didn’t take too long which was a very big up side. They agreed she could return next week at first on part time and gradually build her way back into full time. When she felt herself ready. Despite agreeing he wasn’t sure that Duffy was ready to return to work even part time but knew too well not to argue with her. He changed the subject to something she’d rather talk openly about. “How you coping?” “With what?” “The Baby.” “Oh. All right. Went for my 16 week scan the other day.” “How did it go?” “Good. The baby is growing well” She spoke with a grin and a hint of amazement as if she was puzzled on how the baby managed it. But he knew what she meant. She’d been on a rolercosters of emotions for the past month and it was surprising that the baby wasn’t affected by it at all. Although she was glad of an opportunity to talk about the baby she was aware why he was asking her about it. She knew too well he didn’t think she was ready to return to work and this made her all the more determined to prove him wrong. She wanted to prove to everyone that she wasn’t the emotional wreak they all thought she was. Even if she was a wreak sometimes she needed to know she could do this for the sake of herself and the baby. She smiled at Charlie giving him a kiss, which lingered a bit, too long perhaps then said she must get on and left. The kiss still in her mind, she carried on out the building deciding to go for a walk to clear her head.

Part Four
Walking down the road the kiss was still lingering in her mind. She was feeling very vulnerable after sitting in on Dan and Charlie talk about her as if she wasn’t there. Discussing weather she’d cope all right. It took all her strength not to shout at them that she was in the room. But would only admit that to herself now she was away from them both, away from anyone who’d question her. She was tired of one minute feeling she could cope and she was doing okay and the next feeling vulnerable and as if everyone was whispering about her and waiting for her to brake down. Unable to cope with the stress of pregnancy and her father’s death she couldn’t let them be right. Sitting at home with the boys upstairs Andrew couldn’t help but worry. He had expected her to be gone about 2 or 3 hours not 5! Standing up he took the mobile in his hand and text her asking if she was okay and where she was. Also adding in that he loved her. About 10 minutes later the door opened. She walked in her hair flat and wet due to the rain. Her clothes were sticking to her and her teeth chartering due to the cold weather she had endured. Andrew couldn’t help but fire questions at her. “Where were you? You okay? Why didn’t you take the car? Why didn’t call me? You could of text me!” “I was walking, yes I’m fine, I wanted to walk, I didn’t think and my phone won’t text! Okay?” “Sorry. I was Worried! Come on lets get you out of that wet clothes.” “I’m not Ill you know. I can change myself!” “I know you’re not ill. But I was worried! You were gone five hours Duffy!” “I spoke to Charlie for a while alright!? Then I walked home! Am I not allowed to do that?” “Duffy! Calm down. I didn’t mean it like” “I’m going to change.” Walking out the room she just sighed. She didn’t mean to snap but couldn’t help it when he made her feel like an idiot and that she couldn’t mange anything. Evenings weren’t the best time for her and tonight it was just too much. He made her feel as if she was terminally ill and couldn’t do anything for herself. Her only way of coping with his behaviour was to get of the house for a while and go long walks like today. To clear her head maybe that’s why her kiss with Charlie lingered. Is she crying out to escape him? But she loves Andrew beyond belief. Why wasn’t anything easy or simple? Sitting on the couch an Oh! Was all Andrew could mange. He was trying to help her but was failing miserably. They should be so close just now with the baby on the way but every time they spoke it soon turned into an argument or Duffy storming off. He just wanted to hold her close and not let her go, in fear that something else would harm her, try and hurt her or the baby. With five months to go he knew too well things weren’t going to get easier quite the opposite. She’d feel very tired, get sick of the baby kicking and moving and just end up too fed up. He had no idea how things were going to turn out but it frightened him. She returned down the stairs showered and dressed trying to act better than she felt. Forcing a smile she sat next to Andrew cuddling into him she apologised for snapping at him. Explaining what happened today at work to try and justify her actions. Hoping he was all right with her she kisses him lightly looking into his eyes. She saw his fear but didn’t know why. He held her tight to him like he wanted too. Telling her he’d keep her safe and also apologised for the way he acted. Although things seemed all right both knew it was a short-term solution and that they hadn’t addressed the problem. Before long things would blow up again. They both knew that too well.

Part Five.
Step-by-Step she walked into the department. Feeling more confident that she did the other day but that fear was still chewing away at her. Pushing it to the back of her mind she carried on into the staffroom. Opening the door she could hear the normal chatter of the others. Walking in Chloe and Kelsey where sitting on the couch gossiping about the latest couple Holly and Patrick, not that they were going out more just friendly, they both smiled up on seeing her coming in. Kelsey was the first to speak. “Hello Duffy. Have you heard about Holly and Patrick?” “A bit. Andrew did mention something. Have they really got together?” “Well not really. There are looks and that though.” “That doesn’t mean they are going out. Not in this place anyway.” She said it with a smile and a light tone to show she wasn’t snapping. “Well your right there. Max and you were like that for a while but of course you wouldn’t go out.” “Were we? Never realised. No we wouldn’t.” She Smiled and turned to the mirror letting her mind wander back to her affair, if you could call it that, with Max. There were looks, touches even, near kisses in front of others and of course the constant flirting. But it wasn’t somewhere she wanted to go back to. The excitement was good at the time and the thrill was great but it was short lived. Soon guilt set in and even looking at Andrew was hard. But that was nearly two years ago and everything was very different. She was happily, at the time being, married and he had a girlfriend not that she was very fond of her. Noticing the time she quickly twisted her hair up clipping it into place she turned back to Kelsey and Chloe smiling. “Better get to work eh?” “Oh Damm! Me too. Talk soon Kelsey.” “Best get on me self.” Walking into admin the list of patients was never ending. Max walked up to her, his hand gripping a packet of sweets. No prizes for guessing what kind Duffy thought. She smiled softly at him as he approached her. “Sweet?” he offered half heartily. “No thanks” she grinned once she spoke. “Good! “ he joked before carrying on “How’s the first day back going?” “Alright just got here though.” She smiled sweetly the way she would back then. Not that she realised she was doing it. Realising she’d gone quiet again she smiled and went on to work. Although she soon twigged that everyone was watching her like a hawk. But instead of snapping or shouting she just carried on determined to prove she could work perfectly normal and efficient. Dealing with the patients who had lost someone helped her, she saw on how she wasn’t alone and she knew what to say. Avoiding sayings like “you’ll get through it” that never helped! It was something someone said when he or she couldn’t think of anything else to say. It was like saying “plenty more fish in the sea” to someone who had just been dumped. You didn’t want to get through it you wanted the person back! End of! She was aware Charlie kept her away from certain patients and certain families. She hadn’t dealt with anyone who was difficult but the department was full of them. She knew it was, she could hear them arguing with everyone else. Looking at the clock she only had half an hour left. Sitting in the staffroom she felt alone and quite board. No one was about everybody had either just finished or gone out for lunch. On hearing the door open she looked up to see a fed up Charlie walk in. his eyes were sad and his body hunched in an obvious fed up state that or very upset. “ You alright Charlie? Is something wrong?” “Oh Duffy. Hello. Yeah I’m fine” he spoke strong but knew she’d know he was lying. “Tell the truth. Please.” A sigh came from him. He walks over to her sitting right beside her like she gestured him too. “Baz has just asked me for a divorce.” “Oh Charlie I’m sorry.” “It’s not as if it was unexpected. She’s already got a new bloke.” “What?! You only just broke up.” “I know...She doesn’t waste much time eh?” despite his best efforts soft tears start to fall. Duffy quickly noticed and placed her arms around him softly. Looking up at each other they both got closer until their lips met in a passionate kiss. But instead of pulling away like normal they got more passionate and desperate. Her earlier thoughts about affairs gone.

Part 6: - (small part Sorry) Going over that moment Duffy couldn’t think what the hell had got into her! Yes maybe she did have feelings for Charlie but they were buried deep down where they should stay!! Not on the surface where she had to deal with them. Her friendship with Charlie was too strong and important to her to be wasted on an affair, or a fling. That and she did love Andrew so much so why did she kiss Charlie? This didn’t make any sense at all. Back in his flat Charlie’s mind was wracked with gilt! What the hell was he doing? He just took advantage of a pregnant woman who is grieving and not just any woman but Duffy! Picking up the phone he just had to call her explain it wasn’t right. But he didn’t want to hurt her. Could she cope with another blow? Would this just push her over the edge? Placing the phone back down again his mind wracked with guilt. Watching Andrew walk in the room made her feel guiltier. With her mobile in her hand she went onto text. Her fingers pressed the back up button. Knowing how cruel it was to say what she needed to say over text. Eventually she managed a text say “Meet me At Brookeback Park. In 10 mins. Please! Xx” On hearing the “Beep Beep” that barely went off he at first wondered what the noise was. The saw his phone all lit up to indicate something new. Reading the message he couldn’t guess what she wanted. Was it a “Lets do it again meet me?” Or a “We shouldn’t have done that meet me?” All he knew was that she was much more brave that he was. Locking the door and grabbing his car keys he made his way to the park. Nervous as hell. Smiling Duffy Explained to Andrew she needed to get out for a walk. She told him where she’d be and took her purse and made her way to the Park across the road. On arrival she spotted Charlie swinging on the swings looking as nervous as she felt. A small smile crept across her face automatically as she approached him. “Getting In touch with you Inner child Charlie?” Looking up he saw her walk across to him. She had a small smile, which didn’t tell him much. She was wearing a baggy jumper in a desperate bid to hide her ever-growing bump. He could feel himself smile too as he spoke. “Yeah. Something like that!” “Look Charlie we need to talk.” ”I know…”

Part Seven
Looking at him, his eyes were sad his heart broken by Baz could she really hurt him more? Tears started to swell up in her eyes. “Oh Charlie! I’m Sorry! We can’t carry this on. It’s not right.” Seeing her sadness Charlie automatically hugs her tightly. “Heyy. Calm down. I know. It’s not right. You have Andrew. It was just a spur of the moment. How about we go back to yours eh?” Nodding her eyes still full of tears they started to fall. Alarmed Charlie quickly asks her. “Duffy? You ok? What’s wrong?” “Oh Charlie. I’m sorry. I’m fine. Nothing is wrong. Sorry I’m just glad that everything is not ruined!” “Oh Duffy. Of Course not! Come here” Holding her once more he placed his arm around her shoulders as the walked back to hers. Walking in the door Andrew quickly noticed how Duffy had been crying. “Duffy? Charlie? What’s wrong?” Wiping her eyes Duffy smiled and went up the stairs without a word. “Charlie?” “Oh don’t worry. We were just talking. Nothings wrong. She’s coping very well.” Duffy sat on her bed her knees brought up to her chest as tears still fell. Her blonde hair sat perfectly as she sat shaking getting everything out. At 17 weeks pregnant she knew most of her tears were just her hormones doing summersaults rather than sadness or anger. Wiping her eyes she managed a smile and goes back down the stairs to see Andrew and Charlie on the couch chatting. Andrew looks happy but worried and Charlie’s face just screamed guilt. But of course Andrew couldn’t see it. He didn’t know him that well. Andrew looks up first as does a sleepily Jake who is sitting on his lap. Duffy smiles as goes straight to Jake picking him up he cuddles into her. She looks at Charlie and Andrew who both have the same expression telling her they aren’t happy with her picking up Jake. “Just going to put Mr hear to bed.” With one last smile she leaves the room. “She shouldn’t be picking him up.” Charlie smiles before replying. “She won’t listen to anyone. You know that. If Dan had half a brain he wouldn’t of let her go back to work.” “Oh so that’s how she managed it!” “Yup!” Walking back down she grinned at them then sat between them. “Oh I forgot to ask. When is your next scan?” “Erm. 3 weeks today.” Andrew smiled putting his arm around her. “17 weeks today.” “Andrew.” Charlie nodded towards a sleeping Duffy. “Oh! I don’t want to move her” “No. She’s probably knackered after work today.” “Yeah. She took ages getting home from work today!” “Oh. That’s my fault.” “How?” “Baz asked for a Divorce.” “Sorry Charlie.” “Ah it’s fine. Not unexpected. Anyway I better get going. Just take care of her.” “I will mate. I will” Walking out the door Charlie couldn’t help feel jealous of Andrew. He had the only person he wanted. Duffy.

(lyrics are not mine) Part Eight.
As the months pasted so did the remembrance that any kiss had taken place. It was pushed to the back of their minds with work, new admin and of course a baby on the way. Now in her seventh month of pregnancy Duffy was concerning a period of maturity leave. But the timing was bad. Holly’s sudden departure as well as Barneys left them short staffed, not that they hadn’t been before! The snow fell heavily that day. Walking out the door her blonde elegant hair blew in the morning wind, as did the snow. Her long black coat went to her knees, keeping her warm, her scarf wrapped her neck like a snake also keeping her warm, with added style. Her jeans were thick suitable for the snowy weather. A thick jumper covered her like a bear. As well as 3 shirts underneath, protecting her stomach. Her uniform lay neatly folded in her bag as well as other useless objects. Walking out the door she passed the car opting for a nice scenic walk instead. Walking to Charlies she smiles as he comes out in his usual clothes no way suited for the cold breeze and snow. Smiling she talks. “Hello! Usual clothes eh? Don’t you feel the cold?” Laughing her comes beside her. “Yeah! You overdressed. It isn’t that cold. The poor kid must be roasting.” He spoke as her smiled at her stomach. “It’s snowing Charlie!” She spoke as they both walked to work. ”Ano! Andrew working early?” “Yeah. His shift started at 5.” “Whoa! Peter and Jake got anything on today?” “Yeah. I’m taking them swimming while Andrew chills.” “Isn’t it meant to be the other way round?” Grinning she saw how weird it must appear. “Hehe. Probs!” “Don’t you ever get tired?” “Says Mr workaholic!” Taking out his Ipod he shoves it in Duffy’s ear. “Listen!” “Why?” “Just do!”
SPEND ALL YOUR TIME WAITING FOR THAT SECOND CHANCE FOR A BREAK THAT WOULD MAKE IT OK THERE'S ALWAYS ONE REASON TO FEEL NOT GOOD ENOUGH AND IT'S HARD AT THE END OF THE DAY
I NEED SOME DISTRACTION OOH BEAUTIFUL RELIEFS MEMORIES SEAPTH FROM MY VAINS THAT MAYBE UNTO AND WEIGHTLESS AND MAYBE I FIND SOME PEACE TONIGHT
CHORUS IN THE ARMS OF THE ANGELS FLY AWAY FROM HERE FROM THIS DARK COLD HOTEL ROOM AND THE ENDLESSNESS THAT YOU FEEL YOU ARE PULLED FROM THE WRECKAGE OF YOUR SILENT REVERY YOU'RE IN THE ARMS OF THE ANGEL MAY YOU FIND SOME COMFORT HERE
SO TIRED OF THE STRAIGHT LINE AND EVERYWHERE YOU TURN THERE'S VULTURES AND THIEVES AT YOUR BED THE STORM KEEPS ON TWISTING KEEP ON BUILDING THE LIES THAT YOU MAKE UP FOR ALL THAT YOU LIKE IT DONT MAKE NO DIFFERENCE LETS GIVE THEM ONE LAST TIME IT'S EASIER TO BELIEVE IN THIS SWEET MADNESS OH THIS GLORIOUS SADNESS THAT BRINGS ME TO MY KNEES
CHORUS YOU'RE IN THE ARMS OF THE ANGELS MAY YOU FIND SOME COMFORT HERE SOME COMFORT HERE
“Dads favourite song” she says smiling. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YHPu3sHZENA - Video)

Part Nine
The quiet walk was quite uneventful after that. Too bad work wasn’t the same. Walking through the door they were thrown into chaos. A major RTC had just arrived as well has quiet a few people already in reception. Andrew was in resus having told Kelsey to keep Duffy away and to make sure she dealt with minor cuts and bruises as well as organising everybody. Duffy herself was well aware what he’d told Kelsey and choice to just play along for just now. Standing in admin she looked at the board in disgust! There were three reds. Walking to the first cubical she opened the curtain and stood inside closing it behind her. “I’m So Sorry Mr Martian. I’ll finish those stitches now.” He smiled at her. Been a nurse himself he was well aware how stressful the job was. “It’s Alright. You can’t be everywhere at once.” Smiling back she carried on stitching his arm and told him anything he need to know. One down two to go she thought. Walking to the next cubical she could hear the protesting. She pulls back the curtain more forceful this time and steps in. “Right Betty! I’m sorry for the wait but we are very busy today. I will not accept that language towards my staff!” Walking to her she knew her well. A right regular she was. “I hurt me leg!” “Yes. I know. But you too well we don’t accept that behaviour!” “Sorry won’t do it again. Won’t tell Charlie will you?” “Hmm. Not this time. Been to X-ray yeah?” “Yup. Had Mr James today.” “Ohh.” She said smiling. “Well it looks like it’s a sprain. Would you like a bandage?” “Nahh. Maybe next time! Thanks! Cya!” After having dealt with the last red her next patient was a child about four. He was all cut and on his own. She carefully walked in smiling and sat next to him. “Hello.” “Hi” She looks at his t-shirt. “Do you like iggle piggle?” “Yeah!!” ”So Do I!” “Uppsy daisy not nice!” “No. Not nice.” She smiled then continued. “What happened to you?” “Mummy got angry. Said I was naughty. Got in trouble.” Inside she gasped with horror. But couldn’t let the wee child hear it. “Is that how you got hurt?” He started to cry and nodded. “Don’t make me go back!” “Ohh sweetie” she hugs him carefully rocking him a single tear fell from her cheek she managed to stop anymore falling. Once the wee boy had fallen asleep she carried him, incase he woke up without her, to the cubical entrance and nodded Charlie over. She quickly explained what was going on. “Oh my god!” “Yeah. What do we do?” “Social.” “Social! Charlie!” “What else is there? You can’t just take him home!” “I wish I could…” “Hey. Remember you have two already and one on the way” “Yeah. But Charlie…” He leans over wiping her eyes full of tears. “You can’t get emotionally involved Duffy. You know that.” “Ano..But..”

Part Ten
Tears streamed from her eyes watching the wee boy passing her. “Take Care of him Big Mac.” “I will luv. Don’t worry.” He gave a reassuring smile and took the wee boy down to the morgue. She couldn’t help sobbing more. Suddenly arms were around her and turning her around. She hugged him holding him close as she sobbed. The next thing she knew, he was taking her too his office. He nodded to her to sit on the seat and as she did he knelled in front of her. “Duffy sweetie.” In-between sobs she spoke calmly but she was obviously unsettled to him. “But…Charlie…It was my fault!” “You weren’t to know. No-one knew he had a head injure love.” Still sobbing she glanced down at him. “That Bitch! Hope she rots in hell!” ”Who Duffy? Who?” ”His mother! She killed him! Standing up he took her in his arms as she sobbed he just stood holding her. After she stopped he look at her but not normally. He looked right into her eyes. “Now. What we are going to do is go back to work until the police arrive then we will talk to them. Eh?” “Yeah. And Charlie…” “Yeah?” “Thanks!” He winked at her as he walked with stride out the room. Placing her arms tightly around herself she thought of the unborn child she was carrying. How could anyone hurt a child? The thought of someone hurting her kids made her eyes swell. Taking a deep breath in she smiled and went out the room. The staffroom wasn’t very big. The couch took up a lot of room, as did the lockers yet it had this calming effect on you. A place to relax, think things over or forget cases and home life. Too bad it didn’t always work. It was about twenty minutes before the police arrived. A sturdy woman and a young kid who looked like he should still be in school. Walking up to Duffy the woman spoke quietly to the young boy. “Right. This is Duffy we are going to talk to. She’s lovely but don’t try and mess her around.” ”Yes” She places a hand on Duffy’s shoulder and as Duffy turns she smiles. “Hello Duffy. May we have a chat?” “Hey Carol. Yeah okay.” Walking to Charlie’s office she saw Andrew’s worried expression and smiled. Then she felt an arm around her and Charlie following them in. “Right Duffy. Just a few questions.” “Okay.” It wasn’t just a few questions. In fact it was rather a lot! After words Duffy felt so drained that the colour left her like a tap leaves water. “Come on you. Your shift is over. I’ll go get Andrew.” “No Charlie wait! Can we talk?” Turning back his face filled with worry. “Yeah. No problem. What’s wrong?” “Don’t worry! Its Just Andrew is Duffy driving me mad!” Smiling he felt so reassured that nothing was wrong. “How?” “He keeps bugging me! It’s always are you ok? Should you be doing that? Don’t you want to sit down? I’m going mental!” “He’s just worried about you. How about you both talk?” “Hmm. Good idea! Thanks Charlie!” She smiles and gives him a quick kiss before leaving.
