Thought I would post the article from Digital Spy..I had missed this until it was mentioned in the 'Who's going' thread.
Doctors
EXCLUSIVE
Ex-Dynasty star Emma Samms has now settled into her role in the BBC daytime medical drama and this week I caught up with her for that exclusive chat .
Here’s how it went:
Kris: Tell us a little about your character…
Emma: Amanda Clay is a troubled woman. She started out as the leading force in her marriage to a much younger man and finds that strength to be now slipping through her fingers. Her desperation at this loss of power within her marriage leads her to make decisions that are unwise and that have disastrous consequences.
Kris: What is it like returning to a soap?
Emma: I’m not even sure if Doctors is classified as a ‘Soap’. Apparently it is deemed to be a drama. However, as I filmed my very first scene, in which I both kissed and slapped my husband, I felt this could easily have been a scene from Dynasty. After doing so many films there is a lot of pleasure for me in taking months rather than weeks to develop a character and to have the time to explore so many different facets of a character. Especially one as complex as Amanda Clay.
Kris: What was it like working on Dynasty?
Emma: Working on Dynasty was great fun. It was a very stylised show and at times was very over the top. The clothes, the glamour and the heightened drama that made it so memorable also made it hard work. Arriving at the studio at 5.30am, changing into an evening gown and wearing it for the rest of the day, for example, made one want to hurry home and slob out in front of the TV. It was a privilege to have been part of a show that has become virtually iconic and I will always be grateful to have been part of it.
Kris: What has been your most memorable on-screen and off-screen moments?
Emma: One of my most memorable on-screen moments would have to be stepping into that U.F.O. on The Colbys (Dynasty’s spin-off). As I’m sure the writers and producers hoped, it provoked a great deal of discussion and a certain amount of controversy. My most memorable off-screen moment would have to be when I shot that very scene. It was the middle of the night, we were in the middle of the desert and as it was all very top secret, they decided to use one of the assistant directors to play the spaceman/alien who could just about be seen inside the spacecraft. His spacesuit was silver and very tight indeed, especially in the crotch area. I had to walk up the ramp towards him, in a mesmerised fashion and stand staring him in the face as the ramp closed. As I knew him very well and he wasn’t an actor we both got a fit of giggles. Most unprofessional, especially on my part and it almost scuppered the whole scene.
Kris: Are you anything like your Doctors’ character?
Emma: Other than a distinct physical resemblance, I don’t feel that I have much in common with Amanda Clay. While I can certainly relate to making bad choices out of desperation I feel her moral compass is spinning out of control.
Kris: What is it like working with Adrian and the rest of the cast?
Emma: Adrian Lewis Morgan is truly a delight to work with. As well as being undeniably gorgeous he is fabulously talented as an actor. Luckily our working style is very similar indeed, so we had a great deal of fun and a lot of laughs every day on the set. Hopefully this made our on-screen relationship more plausible. The rest of the cast were extraordinarily welcoming and made me feel very comfortable right from the start. I found Dianne Keen to be as beautiful inside as she is on the outside and one of the highlights of my whole Doctors experience was definitely giving Christopher Timothy a massage!
Kris: You’ve appeared in Holby City a couple of times – Are medical dramas your favourites?
Emma: I’ve always been a fan of medical dramas so it has been a thrill to have been a part of two such great British ones.
Well, there we have it, readers. You and I now know a little more about this lovely and talented British actress – and I DID like the piece about the UFO!
Now for the bad news.
Unfortunately, two characters are to leave the series at Christmas.
Now I know avid fans will be wanting to know who they are, but I’m afraid I have to disappoint you on that score for the time being.
You’ll have to wait a bit longer to find out, but I promise I will do my utmost to be the first to let you know who they are.
