Only caught the end of the opening credits today, and to be honest I never really look at them, but were they different today? I noticed little black and white pictures to the side of each character and I don't recall seeing them before.

are they small still shots of the characters that is currently on screen.
if so then they've been there for as long as i've been watching

i also think pam is talking about the regular sequence.
pam, next time have a close watch: whenever a character is presented in colour, there are little black and white pics of them moving in lines behind the picture. it's been always like that.
