this is from TV Quicks
there's also a recipe for Eva's favourite dish if anyone wants it
Actress and former vegetarian Eva Fontaine likes her food hot and spicy - like her fiery character in Doctors, Faith
What The Doctor Orders
Whats your favourite food?
I would say Thai food, particularly fishcakes, which I adore. I cook a lot of fish or seafood, as well as brown rice and vegetables. I was a vegetarian for 10 years for ethical reasons, until a few years ago, when I decided I wantd to eat meat and fish again. I think it was Christmas that did it and the smell of the turkey. I started to pick at little bits of it and it was so gorgeous that I made an instant decision
Were you a picky eater as a kid?
I was terrible! I wouldn't have most of the things that I love to eat now, particularly the vegetables. My mother did plenty of caribbean dishes and I wish i'd paid a bit more attention as i'd like to cook those dishes now
Did you have school dinners and what were they like?
I did and they were horrible! The worst was semolina with the slick of red sludge in the middle. It makes me gag just thinking about it. My favourite was the yoghurt with the big shortbread biscuit in the middle for dipping.
Do you come from a family of good cooks?
My mum, Nella, is good with Caribbean dishes, I always go home for some proper chicken, rice and peas. My stepdad, Ken, who sadly died last year, also used to cook akra and make it into fishcakes. We were a small household, just the three of us, but every few months we would go to these big family events where people brought their own fantastic Caribbean specialities.
Who cooks in your household?
I live alone in a house in Birmingham, not far from the Doctors set, so it's me! I enjoy cooking for myself and I'll invite friends round regularly and cook for them, usually a big dish with brown rice, vegetables and fish. I don't normally do starters or desserts, but sometimes I'll do a fresh fruit salad and wash it all down with plenty of wine.
What's the most romantic meal that you've ever had?
Here at my favourite restaurant, Blue Elephant in London. It's a special-treat place. I couldn't afford to go more than a few times a year because it's quite expensive, but it's worth it for birthdays and anniversaries. I remember one meal with a former partner who brought me here as a surprise and it was such a lovely evening with the food, the atmosphere and the décor. The romance may be over but I still like coming to the restaurant.
What's your idea of a perfect TV dinner?
It would have to be a packet of plantain chips, which you can easily buy in places like Safeway. They're gorgeous, plussome expensive ice cream like Green and Black's vanilla coupled with a nice bottle of wine. I don't mind if it's white or red but if it's white, it's got to be a bottle of Pinot Grigio
